WSOC: Hofstra Posts Wire-To-Wire Win At Elon

Elon, N.C. – Hofstra capitalized on a first-half own goal and senior forward Leah Galton scored her third goal in a two-game road swing to lift Hofstra to a 2-0 win at Elon in a Colonial Athletic Association matchup on Sunday afternoon from Rudd Field.

Galton scored her CAA-leading ninth goal in the 62nd minute for a key insurance marker and junior goalkeeper Friederike Mehring made two saves for her second shutout of the campaign in extending Hofstra's winning streak to three. The Pride improved to 8-3 overall and 2-0 in CAA play following a 2-1 win at William & Mary on Friday.

Led by sophomore forward Kristin Desmond's game-high six shots, Hofstra established a 19-11 shot advantage as the Phoenix dropped to 7-2-2 and 0-1-1 in conference play. Junior midfielder Jill Mulholland contributed five shots and helped the Pride gain possession advantage.

Hofstra benefitted from an own goal for the second time in three games, taking a 1-0 lead in the second minute when Elon defender Amanda Lasater deflected the ball in to the low right corner. The Pride also saw an opponent put the ball in its own net in a win last week versus Fordham for two own goals this year.

That was the only scoring in the first half. Elon goalkeeper Taylor Mohr made all five of her saves in the opening half to keep the Pride's edge at a single goal. That score held until Desmond facilitated Galton's goal at 61:24 when she sent a cross to the top of the six-yard box that Galton buried to the left side.

Galton set Hofstra's all-time points record in the win over the Tribe and increased her career total to 112 by scoring her fifth goal in six games. She leads the league in goals, goals-per-game and points with 20.

A strong defensive effort secured the Pride's third clean sheet. Senior back Mallory Ullrich, freshman Madeline Anderson, sophomore Rhian Cleverly and junior Emily Agudelo ensured no Elon starter recorded multiple shots.

Hofstra will resume CAA play on Friday at 7 p.m. versus UNCW. The Pride is 4-0 at Hofstra Soccer Stadium this season.
