WSOC: Hofstra’s Comeback Bid Falls Short In OT Loss To UNCW

Hempstead, N.Y. – Hofstra sophomore forward Kristin Desmond erased a late deficit with an 87th minute scoring strike, but UNCW's Maddie McCormick scored the second of her two goals 1:30 into overtime as the Pride fell to the Seahawks, 2-1, in a driving rainstorm at Hofstra Soccer Stadium.

Desmond's third goal of the season sent the game beyond regulation. But McCormick's sixth and seventh goals gave the Seahawks the win in the Colonial Athletic Association contest as every game in the game came past the 83rd minute. Hofstra, ranked first in the NSCAA Mid-Atlantic regional poll, fell to 8-4-0 and 2-1-0 in league play. UNCW improved to 9-3-1 and 2-0-1.

Under extremely wet and windy conditions, the teams played the first 82 minutes to a scoreless draw. McCormick then opened the scoring when she created her own shot by spinning around a defender and firing a shot into the low-left corner at 82:51.

The Pride came right back less than four minutes later when senior Jeannine Molleda sent the ball down the right flank near the 18-yard box. Desmond beat goalkeeper Carolyn Huddy to the right side with 3:31 remaining for the tying goal and sent a Hofstra game beyond regulation for just the second time this season.

In overtime, Hofstra lost the coin toss and UNCW started with the wind advantage. The Seahawks capitalized as Stephanie Bronson and Katrina Guillou made back-to-back direct passes that culminated in McCormick scoring to the low right side off junior goalkeeper Friederike Mehring. Hofstra lost at home for the first time this season in dropping to 4-1.

Mehring made four saves and Huddy added two. UNCW supported the netminder by posting two defensive saves.

Hofstra generated a 71st-minute odd-man rush that saw CAA-leading scorer Leah Galton feed freshman Jenn Buoncore to the left side. Buoncore flicked a shot that went just over the crossbar.

Junior midfielder Jill Mulholland near gave Hofstra the edge when her 77th minute went near the left post. UNCW defender Savannah Andrews blocked the shot and was credited with the defensive save.

Following McCormick's first goal, the UNCW defense again made a key save when back Morgan Leyble moved behind Huddy and kicked the ball out of danger as Desmond's shot went skipping towards the goal line. Desmond regrouped by scoring the equalizer just 56 seconds later.

Galton, who has a CAA-best nine goals, compiled three shots. McCormick notched a game-high six shots.

Hofstra will resume conference play Sunday against the College of Charleston. Kickoff at Hofstra Soccer Stadium is set for noon.
