MTEN: Vulinovich and Akesson Win Doubles Title At Hofstra Invitational

Hempstead, NY - Sophomore Niko Vulinovich and freshman Gustav Akesson won the doubles championship at the A Doubles flight as play concluded at the Hofstra Invitational Saturday evening at the Hofstra Outdoor Tennis Center.

Vulinovich and Akesson was Hofstra's only championship winner in the seven team tournament. The duo opened play with a 7-6 quarterfinal win over Fordham's Joe Kavoloski and Pedro Alonzo. The pair then won their semifinal matchup over Nicolas Auriccio and Tomas Lieb of NYIT by a score of 6-3. Vulinovich and Akesson then claimed the championship with a 7-5 win over Stony Brook's Sam Taieb and Jose Morales.

Hofstra freshman Marcus Smith and junior Ricky Hendler won their B Doubles quarterfinal matchup over NYIT's Jorge Gonzalez and Jamie Salvador by a score of 7-5. But the pair lost in the semifinals to Stony Brook's Kenzo Kauffmann and Rodrigo Hadlich, 6-3. Rafal Charkiewicz and Rares Ispas of NYIT were the eventual flight champions after a 6-3 win over Kauffmann and Hadlich.

In the C Doubles Flight, the Pride's team of senior Leonardo Pires and freshman Yahn Gawrit also won in the quarterfinals, 6-2, over Saint Peter's Doug Nover and Gabe Russotto. But the duo's tournament came to an end with a loss to eventual champions Charlton Boyd and Ilya Kneppelhout of Wagner, 6-4.

In singles play, Vulinovich and Smith both fell in their main draw round of 16 matches at A Singles. Vulinovich lost to Wagner's Dale Sandy, 8-4, while Smith fell to Fairleigh Dickinson's Jake Whalley in a tightly-contested match, 9-8 (7-3). Stony Brook's Sam Taieb won the flight with a win over Nicolas Auriccio of NYIT.

Smith would also drop his consolation bracket quarterfinal matchup to Kavoloski, 8-6. Vulinovich had a bye in the quarterfinals, but lost to Daniil Ivanov of Saint Peter's in the semifinals, 8-3.

Gawrit dropped his B Singles round of 16 match to Gonzalo Quintana of Fairleigh Dickinson, 9-7. Hendler received an opening round bye but lost in the quarterfinals to Hadlich, 9-8. Morales (Stony Brook) was the flight winner with a win over Lieb.

Gawrit and Hendler both won their consolation bracket quarterfinals matches. Gawrit won over Joey Brander of Fordham, 8-1, while Hendler picked up an 8-4 win over Jon Paredes. Gawrit would fall to Lucas Lu of Wagner, 8-6, in the semifinals, while Hendler dropped an 8-6 decision to Eric Poland of Wagner in the other semifinal.  

Pires lost his C Singles round of 16 match to Alex Martinez of NYIT, 8-2. Akesson won over Russotto, 8-1, in his first match before falling in the quarterfinals to Boyd, 8-5. Ispas wound up winning the flight with a win over Kneppelhout.

In the C consolation bracket Pires would advance to the finals with an 8-3 win over Nover in the semifinals but would fall to Kauffmann in the finals, 8-3.  

Kevin Devine was Hofstra's lone entrant at D Singles where he lost to Harris Durkovic of Fordham in the quarterfinals, 8-2. William Bourne of Fairleigh Dickinson was the D Flight champion with a win over Allen Wang of Wagner.

Devine would get a bye to the semifinals of the D consolation bracket where he dropped an 8-3 decision to David Jiang of NYIT.

Hofstra returns to action October 11 versus Wagner. Match time at the Hofstra Outdoor Tennis Center is 12 p.m. The Pride also hosts a scrimmage against NYIT on October 3 at 2 p.m.
