WSOC: Galton Sets Hofstra Points Record In Win Over Tribe

Williamsburg, Va. – Senior forward Leah Galton scored both of Hofstra's goals and set the program's career points record in the process to power the Pride to a 2-1 win over the College of William & Mary in the Colonial Athletic Association opener on Friday evening at Albert-Daly Field.

Galton scored in the 11th minute and added what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 48th minute. Her seventh and eighth goals of the season brought her career point total to 110 and surpassed former teammate Sam Scolarici's mark of 108 points for the most in team history. Scolarici set the previous record in 2014.

Junior goalkeeper Friederike Mehring made three of her four saves in the second half to preserve the one-goal edge following Clara Logsdon's 61st-minute goal. Hofstra won for the seventh time in the last eight games to improve to 7-3 overall and 1-0 in league play. William & Mary fell to 6-3-1 and 0-1.

Senior defender Mallory Ullrich notched her career-high sixth assist at 10:59, setting up Galton's game-opening strike. Ullrich, who is tied for the league lead in helpers, facilitated Galton, who beat W&M goalkeeper Caroline Casey to the top-right side.

The score held at halftime as the Pride held the opposition to just one on-target shot through the opening 45 minutes. Hofstra then scored a crucial insurance goal just 2:08 into the second half. Sophomore Kristin Desmond's throw-in from the touch line went to freshman Jenn Buoncore. The first-year forward continued the sequence by heading the ball right to Galton, who finished by beating Caroline across for the record-setting goal.

Galton logged a game-high six shots. The Harrogate, England native has 44 career goals and will be looking to break Scolarici's record of 50. Galton also has 22 assists, moving her within striking distance of Jerilyn Marinan's Hofstra record of 26.

Logsdon's first goal put the Tribe within striking distance when she scored off a corner at 60:11. The Tribe applied pressure late, though Mehring saved Haley Kavanaugh's 83rd-minute header and stopped Kavanaugh's 84th-minute shot. The Pride posted an official victory on William & Mary's home field for the first time since 2010.

Hofstra will resume CAA play on Sunday with a 1 p.m. game at Elon. Hofstra won the only previous meeting between the schools with a 4-1 victory in North Carolina last season. Galton scored in that contest.
