FH: Hofstra Wins Fifth Consecutive Game, Tops Quinnipiac, 6-3

Hempstead, NY – Sophomore Simca Schoen recorded two goals and two assists and junior Claudia Marin Samper added two goals and an assist to lead the Hofstra Pride to its fifth consecutive victory with a 6-3 decision over the Quinnipiac Bobcats at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium Friday afternoon.

Hofstra improves to 7-3 on the season while the Bobcats fall to 2-7.

The Pride erupted for four-first half goals on the way to a 4-1 lead after 35 minutes while Hofstra sophomore goalie Carys Swan made five of her eight saves in the contest in the first period to dampen the spirits of the visitors.

Marin Samper opened the scoring at the 7:25 mark, off a rebound, to tally her ninth goal of the season. Schoen notched her first of the game and fourth of the season on a steal eight minutes later for a 2-0 Pride lead.

Quinnipiac closed the gap to 2-1 as Lauren Belskie scored her first goal of the year, off a penalty corner, at the 17:25 mark.

But Hofstra added two more goals before the end of the half. Junior Colby Hussong scored her fourth of the season from Simca Schoen at the 24:38 mark to boost the Pride lead to 3-1. Schoen then scored her second off a penalty corner, with Leigh Maxwell-Smith and Marin Samper assisting on the tally. Despite the 4-1 score at the break, Hofstra was outshot in the first half, 8-6.

The Pride boosted the lead to 5-1 just 5:23 into the second half when junior Stella Schoen, Simca's older sister, tallied her eighth goal of the year, off a penalty corner with juniors Emily Gallagher and Maxwell-Smith assisting on the play.

The Bobcats sandwiched two goals around a Hofstra tally by Marin Samper, her 10th of the season, in the 62nd minute but they could get no closer than the final margin. Savanna Reilly scored her third goal of the year in the 46th minute and Meghan McCullough posted her second of the season in the 68th minute to close out the scoring.

Hofstra, which outshot Quinnipiac, 10-5 in the second half, took the game honors and outshot the Bobcats 16-13. Each team had five penalty corners.

Hofstra returns to action on Sunday, September 27 when the Pride host the Bulldogs of Yale at 2 p.m.
