WSOC: Quick Offensive Start Pushes Hofstra Past Fordham

Hempstead, N.Y. – Hofstra scored three straight goals, including first-half tallies from Jill Mulholland and Emily Agudelo, to cap non-conference play with a 3-1 victory over Fordham on Sunday afternoon from Hofstra Soccer Stadium.

Mulholland, a junior midfielder, notched her fourth goal of the season with a fifth-minute strike, Agudelo added a goal in the 24th minute and the Pride benefitted from an own goal just 1:18 into the second half to beat the Atlantic 10-member Rams and improve to 6-3. Fordham's Jessica Widmann scored her team-leading seventh goal but could not prevent the Rams from falling to 6-3.

Hofstra improved to 4-0 at home this season in out-shooting the Rams, 20-11. Hofstra held a 12-1 edge in shots in the opening half to take a 2-0 lead into the locker room.

Senior forward Leah Galton facilitated the opening goal by feeding a centering pass that Mulholland blasted for the opening goal at 4:15. Galton's second assist of the season increased her career point total to 106, which moved her just two behind Sam Scolarici's program record set last season. Scolarici was in attendance at the game.

Galton also registered her 22nd career assist to tie Elaine O'Connor (1999-03) for the third-most in program history. The record is 26 set by Jerilyn Marinan (1997-00).

Freshman Jenn Buoncore, who started as one of Hofstra's three forwards, assisted on Emily Agudelo's goal at 23:59. Agudelo lofted a long-range shot that Fordham goalkeeper Megan Fitzgerald misplayed, allowing it to bounce in near the left post for the two-goal edge.

Coming out of the break, Hofstra increased its lead to 3-0 in the 47th minute. Following a Fordham foul near its own box, the ensuring free kick hit off a Fordham defender's head and past Fitzgerald for the first own goal of Hofstra's season.

Junior goalkeeper Friederike Mehring did not face a shot-on-goal in her 74:50 of action. The Pride then inserted redshirt-freshman goalie Ashley Wilson, who made her collegiate debut. Wilson was tested right away when she saved Fordham's Kristina Maksuti's shot less than a minute later.

Wilson made three saves. The only goal she surrendered came when East Meadow product Widmann scored off Rachel Myers' feed from nearly five yards out in the 80th minute to end Hofstra's shutout bid.

The Pride improved to 11-2-2 in the all-time series with the two teams playing for the first time since 2010. Hofstra was ranked ninth in the NSCAA Mid-Atlantic regional poll while Fordham entered the weekend fourth.

Hofstra will start Colonial Athletic Association play on Friday at William & Mary at 7 p.m. The Pride will then face Elon on Sunday at 1 p.m.
