WTEN: Hofstra Advances Three To Semifinals At Hofstra Invitational

Hempstead, NY – Three Hofstra Women's Tennis players – Sarah Bowen, Carmen Pestano and Sarah Catherine Herndon – advanced to the semifinals of their respective singles flights at the Hofstra Invitational Friday afternoon.

Bowen advanced to the semifinals of the A Singles bracket without having to play a match. The senior received a bye in the round of 16 and then her opponent in the quarterfinals, Katie Grant of Colgate, withdrew before the start of the match due to an injury.

Bowen will face Jennifer Ho of Colgate in the semifinals Saturday afternoon. Ho Posted an 8-2 win in the first round over Lucia Radovic of Saint Peter's in the round of 16 before downing Hofstra's Giulia Leone in the quarterfinals, 8-3. Leone had defeated Marina Rull Valvieso in her opening match, 9-7.

Pestano went 2-0 on the day to reach the semifinals on the lower half of the A Singles bracket. The junior defeated Rina Baynes of Wagner in the round of 16, 8-3, and then got past Colgate's Kaelin Brittin, 8-3, in the quarterfinals. Pestano will meet Lauren Hyland of Colgate, who defeated Malieva Hedberg of Saint Peter's, 8-1, in the quarterfinals.

Herndon, a freshman, went 1-0 competing at the B Singles flight to reach the semifinals. After a round of 16 bye, Herndon defeated Wagner's Madison Pautsch, 8-5, in the quarterfinals. Herndon will face Saint Peter's Claudia Hellman in the semifinals.

Sophomore Ria Shah dropped her opening round match to Jenna Harris of Wagner, 8-5, and will compete in the consolation bracket on Saturday.

The Pride did not fare as well in doubles play as both Hofstra teams fell in the round of 16. Bowen and Pestano lost 7-6 to Colgate's Nicole Szczech and Cheyenne Brown. Leone and Shah fell 6-1 to Valvieso and Avika Sagwal of Wagner.
