WSOC: Mulholland Scores But Hofstra Falls To Boston U. In Overtime

Boston, MA – Pride junior Jill Mulholland scored her third goal of the season but Terrier senior Clare Pleuler scored 6:35 into overtime to give the Boston University Terriers a 2-1 victory over Hofstra at Nickerson Field Sunday afternoon.

Hofstra, which saw its five-game winning streak snapped, is now 5-3 on the season. The Terriers, who saw their six-game winless streak ended, picked up their first win of the year and are now 1-4-2.

Despite a combined total of 13 shots between the two teams, only one goal was scored in the first 45 minutes of the contest. The Terriers opened the scoring at the 25:14 mark as freshman Dorrie Varley-Barrett scored her first goal of the season off a pass from senior Jenna Fisher.

The Pride outshot Boston University, 8-5 in the first half with Terrier senior goalie Alyssa Parisi stopping three shots while Hofstra junior keeper Friederike Mehring made two saves.

Mulholland, the Pride midfielder, tied the game in the 60th minute with an unassisted tally to knot the score at 1-1. It was Mulholland's third goal of the season.

While Hofstra was putting the pressure on the Terrier defense, their 11 shots in the second half often went awry. Boston was held to just three shots in the second period, all three had to be stopped by Mehring as the contest went into overtime.

The Pride almost ended the contest just 2:05 in the overtime when freshman Jenn Buoncore hit the post on what would have been her first collegiate goal.

Less than five minutes later, Pleuler struck a blast from 25-yards out that sailed into the top left corner of the goal to give the Terriers their first victory of the season.

Hofstra outshot the Terriers, 21-10. Mehring finished with five saves for the Pride while Parisi recorded four saves for Boston.

The Pride return to action on Sunday, September 20 when they host the Rams of Fordham University at 2 p.m.
