WTEN: Hofstra Wraps Up Play At Stony Brook Classic

Stony Brook, NY - Freshman Sarah Catherine Herndon made a run to the consolation finals of the D singles bracket Saturday as Hofstra completed play at the Stony Brook Classic.

Herndon lost her main draw match in the round of 16 to Isabel Balsavage of Navy on Friday, 6-4, 6-4, before coming back on Saturday for a run to the consolation bracket finals. Herndon defeated Fairfield's Gabriella Campos, 8-2, in the quarterfinals and then posted an 8-3 win over Jovana Hadzi-Tanovic of Bryant in the semifinals. But the run came to an end in the finals as Stony Brook's Louise Badoche picked up an 8-6 win over Herndon.

In other D singles competition, sophomore Ria Shah lost to Kelly Abbanat of Navy, 6-1, 6-1, in the main draw and was then eliminated by Alex Bryant of Fairleigh Dickinson in the consolation quarterfinals by a score of 8-5.

Senior Sarah Bowen went 0-2 for the Pride at A singles, dropping a 6-2, 6-0 decision to Stony Brook's Ana Carion Rodriguez in the main draw round of 16. She then fell to Logan Antill of Navy, 8-5, in the consolation quarterfinals. Freshman Michelle Kaplan lost her opening round match in the main draw, 6-0, 6-1, to Sam Droop of Navy before going 1-1 in the consolation bracket. Kaplan picked up her first collegiate win with an 8-2 victory over Briana Leonard of Bryant before falling to Bowdoin's Tiffany Cheng, 8-1, in the consolation semifinals.

Junior Carmen Pestano lost a 6-3, 6-4, main draw match at B singles to Ashanti Campfield of Bryant and was then eliminated by Maddie Rolph of Bowdoin in the consolation quarterfinals by a score of 8-2.

Junior Giulia Leone also lost in the main draw at C singles, falling 6-2, 6-4 to Nina Luiggi of Bryant. Leone won her consolation quarterfinals match against Courtney Connors of Fairfield, 8-0, but was knocked out of the competition by Navy's Catalina Rico, 8-1.

In doubles action, the team of Bowen and Pestano picked up an A doubles round of 16 win over Droop and Rico of Navy, 6-4, before falling in the quarterfinals, 7-5, to the team of Alex Bryant (FDU) and Tess Trinka (Bowdoin), 7-5.

Leone and Shah were defeated in a round of 16 match at B doubles by Rozel Hernandez and Sabrina Jiang of Navy, 6-2, while Herndon and Kaplan were eliminated in a B doubles round of 16 match by Ally Haley and Melanie Allen of Army, 6-1.

The Pride returns to action this weekend when it hosts the Hofstra Invitational. The three-day tournament begins Friday and concludes Sunday.
