WSOC: Hofstra Extends Winning Streak In 2-1 Win Over Stony Brook

Hempstead, N.Y. – Hofstra produced double digit shots in each half and freshman defender Madeline Anderson's 66th minute go-ahead goal was the difference the Pride's 2-1 win over Stony Brook on Friday night at Hofstra Soccer Stadium.

Senior forward Leah Galton scored the opening goal in the 49th minute and out-shot the entire Stony Brook team, 10-9, to help Hofstra win for the fifth consecutive game in improving to 5-2. Stony Brook's Manuela Corcho came off the bench to score the visitor's only goal. The Seawolves fell to 2-5.

Hofstra out-shot the opposition, 33-9. Junior midfielder Jill Mulholland pushed the pace and generated eight shots. Freshman forward Jenn Buoncore also was effective starting at forward, compiling six shots to complement sophomore forward Kristin Desmond's five. Stony Brook goalkeeper Emily Doherty made eight saves to keep the Seawolves close.

Hofstra held an 18-4 shot advantage in the first half, though the teams went into the locker room scoreless. The teams were playing for the first time since 2008.

Galton scored her team-leading sixth goals to open the scoring at 48:07. The Harrogate, England native took Buoncore's header and pushed a shot into the right corner for her 42nd career goal. She also moved her point total to 105, which is just three away from matching Sam Scolarici's program record set last season when the duo teamed up in the attacking end. Galton entered with the seventh-most goals of any active NCAA Division I  players. She has a goal in five of the six games in which she's played this season.

Corcho gave the Seawolves the tying goal at 64:28 when she converted Lauren Kovalchuk's pass into the equalizer. But the Pride responded just 1:13 later when Anderson capitalized on a failed clear and scored from nearly 12 yards out. It was her second goal of her freshman season.

Hofstra improved to 3-0 at home this season and is 8-2 at home since 2014. The Pride entered the game ranked third in the latest NSCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional poll and improved to 9-3 in the all-time series against Stony Brook.

Hofstra will resume action Sunday afternoon against former America East-rival Boston University. Kickoff from Nickerson Field is set for 2 p.m.
