VB: Hofstra Wins Home Opener Over Siena

Hempstead, NY – Freshman outside hitter Luisa Domingues tallied a double-double with 13 kills and 14 digs, while junior outside hitter Veronika Kostova posted a team-high 15 digs to lead the Hofstra Volleyball team to a four-set win over Siena on Tuesday afternoon at the David S. Mack Physical Education Center.

Senior libero Corrina Delgadillo had a match-high 26 digs for Hofstra.

With the win Hofstra improves to 4-1 this season, while Siena falls to 1-4. Set scores were 25-21, 21-25, 27-25 and 20-25.

The contest was a match-up of a pair of teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament a season ago as Hofstra won the Colonial Athletic Association and Siena captured the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

The two teams split the opening two sets by identical scores before the pivotal third set would see seven tie scores en route to a tight stanza. Hofstra would have several opportunities to put the set away before finally earning the 27-25 win. The Pride finally ended the stanza on their third set point.

In the fourth set, Hofstra used an early 8-1 run to break a 4-4 tie and take a commanding 12-5 lead. Sophomore middle blocker Leticia Valente had a pair of kills during the run to push the Pride to the large advantage. A service ace from freshman outside hitter Nanishka Perez would give Hofstra its largest lead of the set at 22-12 before the Pride comfortably held on for the five-point win.

Perez had the best match of her young career with nine kills and seven digs, while junior defensive specialist Sophia Black tallied 16 digs for the Pride. Valente finished with 12 kills and tied junior setter Hannah Klemm for team-high honors with three blocks. Klemm also dished out 56 assists and added seven digs.

Briana Flagg and Annie Stock each tallied 17 kills for Siena. Haley Howell had 41 assists and 16 digs for the Saints.

Hofstra returns to action this weekend when it takes part in the Seton Hall Classic. The Pride will face Temple on Friday before taking on Seton Hall and Notre Dame on Saturday.
