WSOC: Galton’s Two Goals Lifts Hofstra Over FDU

Hempstead, N.Y. – Senior forward Leah Galton blasted an 82nd-minute shot into the right corner for the second of her two goals on the day to lift Hofstra to a 4-3 non-conference win over Fairleigh Dickinson on Sunday afternoon at Hofstra Soccer Stadium.

Galton scored the opening goal at the nine minute mark and capped a three-goal Hofstra second half with her fourth tally of the season to help the Pride win for the second time in three days in improving to 2-2. FDU's Carly Tice and Connie Lewis each scored, though the Knights fell to 1-2.

FDU's Felicia Burr made 11 saves to help the Knights stay in the game despite Hofstra holding a 31-10 shot advantage. The Pride built a 16-4 edge in shots in the second half. Junior Jill Mulholland tallied a game-high six shots.

Galton headed in senior Jeannine Molleda's corner kick nine minutes in to open the scoring. The Pride established a 14-1 edge in corner kicks on the game.

FDU tied the score when Lewis connected on Rachel Hoekstra's give-and-go for the tying marker at 20:49. Lewis buried a shot from five yards out to tie the score heading into the half.

The Knights got the jump on Hofstra to open the second half. Tice scored 1:27 into the half, heading Esther Rochon's pass into the right corner for the go-ahead goal. The Pride responded slightly more than three minutes later when sophomore Kristin Desmond potted Hofstra's second goal off a corner. Senior defender Mallory Ullrich crossed the ball and Desmond headed it in for the tying score.

Molleda capped a three-point game by scoring the go-ahead goal at 53:15. Molleda notched her first goal of the season by rocketing a 23-yard free kick into the net's upper-right corner.

FDU didn't go down quietly, tying the score for a second time when Noelle Picone capitalized on Nikki Keicher's pass and tied the score at 3 in the 72nd minute. The teams remained deadlocked until Galton ran almost the entire length of the field's offensive half down the left flank and pushed a shot past Burr on a one-on-one matchup for her fourth goal of the season.

Galton's goal was the 40th of her career and moved her past Christa Eidenweil (1997-00) for the second-most in program history. Sam Scolarici's 50 goals is the record.

Following Friday's win over Columbia, the Pride will next be in action with two games in the Yale Invitational starting against the Bulldogs on Sept. 4 at 7:30 p.m. followed by a matchup against CCSU on Sept. 6 at 12:30 p.m.
