WSOC: Hofstra Blanks Columbia For Season’s First Win

Hempstead, N.Y. – Senior Leah Galton scored the game-opening goal in the 47th minute and sophomore Katie Gerdes added the insurance marker in the 79th to lift Hofstra to a 2-0 win over Columbia on Friday evening at Hofstra Soccer Stadium.

Junior goalkeeper Friederike Mehring made four saves for her sixth career shutout. Hofstra (1-2) held a 22-12 shot advantage in picking up its first win of the season. Columbia managed 10 shots in the second half after mustering just two in the first but dropped its season opener.

Galton, the two-time CAA Player of the Year award winner, scored her second goal of the season when she headed in Emily Agudelo's cross at 46:05 to break a scoreless tie. Galton also scored against No. 6 Penn State on Opening Day Aug. 21 and her tally against the Lions gave her 38 for her career, moving her just one away from Christa Eidenweil's mark for the second-most in program history. Galton has 96 career points and is close to becoming just the second player in team history with 100 (former teammate Sam Scolarici has the record with 108).

Gerdes scored her first collegiate goal, coming off the bench to beat Columbia goalkeeper Allison Spencer to the upper corner. Gerdes played eight games as freshman in 2014 before injuries cut shot her season. Her first career goal was facilitated by freshman defender Madeline Anderson, who registered her first career assist and point on the insurance marker.

Junior midfielder Jill Mulholland made a difference in both ends of the field and tied Agudelo and Galton for a game-high five shots. Sophomore forward Kristin Desmond also contributed two shots.

Five of Hofstra's six reserves – Kerri Baum, Jamie Delaney, Gerdes, Noriana Radwan and Sabrina Barton, each tallied a shot.

Mehring preserved the shutout by stopping Carline Militello's 89th-minute header. Hofstra improved to 6-4-1 in the all-time series against Columbia. Hofstra is 4-0-1 in the last five meetings dating to 2008.

Hofstra will return to action on Sunday against Fairleigh Dickinson. The Hofstra Men's Soccer team will face Vermont at 12 p.m. and Head Coach Simon Riddiough's team will follow with the matchup against FDU immediately following as part of a single-admission doubleheader at Hofstra Soccer Stadium.
