WSOC: Hofstra Falls To Rutgers On First Half Goal

University Park, Pa. – Junior goalkeeper Friederike Mehring made five saves and senior Leah Galton posted two of Hofstra's three on-target shots, but No. 24 Rutgers scored in the 40th minute as the Pride fell to the Scarlet Knights, 1-0, in the conclusion of the Penn State Invitational on Sunday afternoon at Jeffrey Field.

Jenna Seddon scored off Gabby Moreno's feed at 39:18 for the only scoring. Hofstra fell to 0-2 in dropping a pair of one-goal contests in the season-opening tournament after dropping a 2-1 decision to host and No. 6 Penn State on Friday. Hofstra surrendered just three goals total in two games against nationally ranked Big Ten opponents.

Casey Murphy made three saves for Rutgers (2-0). The Pride held a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks, though Seddon's one-timer of Moreno's cross proved to be the difference.

Mehring and Murphy each totaled three saves in the opening half. Mehring made two second-half saves to keep the deficit at one while Rutgers did not concede an on-target shot in the final 45 minutes.

Four position players logged all 90 minutes, including freshman defender Madeline Anderson and senior defender Mallory Ullrich. Midfielders Jill Mulholland and Chloe Dale also played the entire game. Freshman Noriana Radwan came off the bench to play 55 minutes and Jamie Delaney registered 45.

Hofstra will return to action on Friday with the home opener against Columbia at 5 p.m. from Hofstra Soccer Stadium.
