WSOC: Hofstra Drops Close Season Opening Contest To #6 Penn State

University Park, Pa. – Senior Leah Galton scored the tying goal in the 65th minute before Penn State's Emily Ogle scored the game-winning goal just three minutes later as Hofstra fell to No. 6 Penn State, 2-1, on Opening Day in the PSU Invitational on Friday evening.

Galton, a three-time Colonial Athletic Association Preseason Player of the Year, scored Hofstra's first goal of the season by scoring to the bottom right corner at 64:28. Ogle then gave the Nittany Lions the lead for good at 67:44 when Ogle lifted a free kick from just outside the box into the back of the net.

Mallory Weber's scored in the 17th minute for the only goal in the opening half, capitalizing on Emily Jean's pass. PSU held a 9-4 shot advantage in the first half.

Galton, who tied for the CAA lead with 17 goals in 2014, posted a team-high three shots and two shots-on-goal. Junior goalkeeper Friederike Mehring made four saves to keep the Pride in the game.

Junior Jill Mulholland made her first game experience since Sept. 14, 2014. She logged 84 minutes and two shots in her first game back from an injury-shortened season.

Freshman defender Madeline Anderson played all 90 minutes in her collegiate debut and was the only first-year player to start. Junior Kerri Baum, freshman Jamie Delaney, Noriana Radwan and Jenn Buoncore all made their Hofstra debuts as reserves.

Hofstra was picked second in the Colonial Athletic Association preseason poll and faced a Penn State squad that is the Big Ten favorite. The Nittany Lions were a second seed in the NCAA Tournament and advanced to the national quarterfinals before falling to Texas last season. It was the 10th time in program history PSU advanced that far.

Hofstra will conclude the Penn State Invitational on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. against Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights are ranked 24th and will mark the second consecutive Big Ten opponent the Pride will face to start the season.
