SB: Hofstra Posts Doubleheader Sweep Over Lehigh

Bethlehem, Pa. – A whirlwind seventh inning that saw junior Caryn Bailey smash a two-out grand slam to erase a Hofstra deficit in the top of the inning and a play-at-the-plate for the final out helped the Pride push past Lehigh, 5-4, in a come-from-behind win in the opener of a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at Kaufman Field. Senior Taylor Pirone threw a complete-game six-hitter in Hofstra's 4-0 win in the second game to sweep the twin bill.

Bailey hit two home runs in the first game to account for all five RBIs in helping to snap Lehigh's 15-game winning streak. Hofstra improved to 19-9-1 following the two wins against the Patriot League leaders. Lehigh dropped to 24-5.

Hofstra trailed Lehigh, 3-1, in the opener entering the seventh with the only run coming on Bailey's solo shot to lead off the fourth against starter Emily Bausher (12-3), who retired the first two batters on ground outs to start the seventh. But sophomore Christie Sinacori and freshman Brielle Pietrafesa worked walks to put the potential tying runs on base. Junior Chloe Fitzgerald slapped a game-extending single to shallow left to load the bases.

The left-handed-hitting Bailey then smashed her third grand slam of the season, taking Bausher to left-center to turn a two-run deficit into a 5-3 lead. Hofstra senior Morgan Lashley gave up a leadoff infield single but retired the next two batters before Vicky Lattanzio walked to put the potential tying run on base.

Pirone entered in a save situation and forced Jessica Calvini to hit a slow grounder to third. A fielding error at first allowed the ball to scoot past first, scoring one unearned run. Pinch-runner and trailer Rachel Timberman followed closely on the play was waved around to score the tying run. But sophomore second baseman Lacey Clark retrieved the ball and delivered the throw to senior Erin Trippi, who applied the tag on a sliding Timberman to end the game.

Lashley (11-1) won her 11 consecutive decision by striking out seven with four runs (three earned) in 6 2/3 innings. Pirone registered her second save of the season.

Lehigh's Alexis Watanabe pulled a two-out RBI single to left side that plated Emma Capetz for the game-opening run in the third. The two-strike hit put the Mountain Hawks ahead in the third and capitalized on Captez's leadoff double.

Cassie Waggy drove in a run on a fielder's choice in the fourth, responding in the bottom of the frame after Bailey hit her first home run. Lattanzio then hit a RBI double to right-center in the fifth.

In the second game, with heavier rain, the Pride scored in the first off a Lehigh fielding error that allowed junior Kim Smith to come around from third after a low throw by third baseman Morgan Decker went low and pulled Waggy off the bag at first.

That would be all Pirone would need as she struck out eight and walked just one in improving to 8-8. Clark scored in the third on Megan Patierno's RBI double and took a 3-0 lead when Bailey reached on a three-base error and scored on Smith's RBI ground out. Patierno singled and scored when fellow freshman Pietrafesa hit a seventh-inning single for the insurance run.

Hofstra will next be in action on Saturday as the Pride plays a Colonial Athletic Association against Drexel in Philadelphia.
