TEN: Hofstra Heads To CAA Championships This Week

Hempstead, NY - The 2015 Colonial Athletic Association Men's and Women's Tennis Championships will be held April 16-19 at the Millie West Tennis Facility and Commons Tennis Facility on the campus of the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia.  
 
Nine women's and eight men's teams will compete for conference titles and an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship. The women's championship opens with a first-round match on Thursday, April 16 at 10 a.m. between ninth-seeded Hofstra and eighth-seeded Delaware.
 
Hofstra was 12-4 on the season and feature five players with double-figure win totals. Senior Louise Lopez leads the team with 15 victories, while junior Sarah Bowen, senior Bianca Derrick and sophomore Carmen Pestano have tallied 13 wins.  Sophomore Giulia Leone has posted 12 victories. The doubles tandem of Bowen and Pestano leads the team with 13 wins, while Lopez and Derrick have 12 wins.
 
Delaware was 5-8 overall during the regular season, but defeated Hofstra, 6-1, on April 11.  Danea Jonjic' and Arielle Shuren lead the Blue Hens with 10 singles wins each. The pair have also posted a 10-6 doubles record.
 
The winner of the match will advance to play top-seeded William & Mary in the quarterfinals on Friday, April 17 at 9 a.m.  William & Mary (13-6) is ranked #57 nationally by the ITA and has captured 22 of the past 30 CAA championships, with their most recent title coming in 2013. W&M is led by junior Leeza Nemchinov, who is 24-3 overall this season and is ranked #51 nationally in singles. Senior Jeltje Loomans has won 21 singles matches and teams with Nemchinov to form the nation's 62nd-ranked doubles team.
 
The Hofstra Men's Tennis Team, seeded sixth, opens play Friday night at 6 p.m. with a quarterfinal matchup against third-seeded William & Mary. The Pride posted a 10-6 record during the regular season and won four of their last five matches. Four Pride players won double-digit singles matches led by sophomore Ricky Hendler's 16 victories. Senior Ari Richman and freshman Niko Vulinovich each won 14 matches, while senior Beau Wills compiled 13 wins. Wills and Vulinovich were Hofstra's top doubles team, posting a 9-4 record.  Hofstra did not face William & Mary during the regular season.
 
William & Mary, which has advanced to the finals twice in the past five years, is 13-12 on the season. The Tribe features one of the league's top young players in freshman Christian Cargill and has the conference's top-ranked doubles team in seniors Will Juggins and Aaron Chaffee.
 
The winner of the Hofstra-William & Mary match goes on to face the winner of #2 Elon/#7 Drexel match in the semifinals on Saturday.
 
The two championship matches take place on Sunday, April 19. The event is open to the public and there is no admission charge. Live scoring will be available for the matches thought the Tournament Central links above.
