SB: Hofstra Goes 1-1 In Second Day Of FAU Tournament

Boca Raton, Fla. – Hofstra scored two runs in the first for the game's only offense in a 2-0 win over Coastal Carolina in the opener before the Pride fell in the bottom of the seventh to nationally ranked Florida State, 2-1, in the second day of the Florida Atlantic Parents' Weekend Tournament on Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore Lacey Clark and senior Erin Trippi each had RBIs in the opener to support senior pitcher Morgan Lashley's complete-game four-hitter. Junior center fielder Caryn Bailey hit a first-inning home run against the 12th-ranked Seminoles, though Florida State scored once in the sixth and netted three hits in the seventh for the walk-off victory. The Pride moved to 7-7 on the season and 2-2 in the tournament.

Hofstra got to Coastal Carolina starter Kiana Quolas early. Junior outfielder Chloe Fitzgerald, who went 3-for-4 on the day, reached on a leadoff infield single. Bailey reached on a bunt single and a walk loaded the bases. Quolas then walked Clark to force in the first run and Trippi hit into a fielder's choice to score Bailey for the two-run lead.

That was all the support Lashley needed. The right-hander struck out 10 against just one walk for her second shutout this season. Lashley improved to 4-1 on the season after going the distance for her second complete game of 2015. Quolas did not allow any additional runs in her complete-game six-inning effort but still fell to 6-7. Coastal Carolina dropped to 12-11.

Bailey smashed her first home run of the season to start things off against starter Jessica Burroughs, sending a leadoff shot to right. Bailey's long ball was her 17th career home run, moving her into a tie with teammate Trippi for the 13th most all-time in program history.

Senior pitcher Taylor Pirone, who allowed just six hits in the game, made the lead stand up until Florida State rallied in the bottom of the sixth for the tying run. Florida State capitalized when Maddie O'Brien reached on a fielding error to start the inning. Victoria East's RBI single brought home the unearned run, though Pirone limited the damage to just the single run as the game went into the seventh tied.

Pirone took the hard-luck loss and fell to 3-6 when O'Brien hit a game-winning single to right-center. Florida State improved to 16-5.

Hofstra will conclude the tournament on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. against host Florida Atlantic.
