ATH: Hall of Fame Inductee Spotlight - Kevin Huff

Hempstead, NY - Each week, leading up to the Hofstra Athletics Hall of Fame Dinner on April 12, GoHofstra.com will feature members of the Class of 2015. Today's spotlight is on two-sport great Kevin Huff.

"In the decade that I coached Hofstra University's Lacrosse team, I considered Kevin to be as great a college lacrosse player I had the privilege to coach or to coach against. I consider myself truly fortunate simply because a coach encounters a player of Kevin's caliber only once or twice in his career…that is, only if he is truly fortunate. Kevin's impact on the Hofstra University Lacrosse team in 1977 and 1978 was immeasurable and his contributions remain unsurpassed." - Harry Royle, Hofstra Lacrosse Coach (1976-85)

Kevin Huff was a standout on the men's lacrosse and football teams from 1973 to 1978. He was a two-time All-American in lacrosse and was part of three NCAA Tournament teams, while also being the first running back in school history to eclipse 1,000 rushing yards in a season.

A two-time team Most Valuable Player, Huff would be selected to play in the North-South Senior All-Star Game in 1978 after tallying 32 goals and 19 assists that season. He played under Hofstra University Hall of Fame Coaches Howdy Myers and Harry Royle during his tenure and was a two-year team captain.

On the gridiron Huff rushed for 1,055 yards as a senior in 1977 to become the first Hofstra player to break the 1,000-yard mark. He also held the single game record of 217 yards in a game, which stood for 10 years. He was named the Metro Conference Offensive Player of the Year and would also earn All-ECAC Division III accolades.

Huff's 51 points in 1978 rank in among the top 30 single season totals in program history and his 11 points in a game (six goals, five assists) versus New York Tech in 1978 is tied for the second-highest single game total in school history. His 1,989 rushing yards rank as the 10th-best total in Hofstra Football history and the 1,055 yards in 1977 are now the fourth-most in a single season in the program record book.

After graduating from Hofstra, Huff continued his lacrosse career for nearly three decades, playing professionally for the New York Saints and with the Long Island and Suffolk Lacrosse Clubs.

He was inducted into the Long Island Metro Lacrosse Foundation Hall of Fame in 2010. In recognition of his outstanding athletic achievements, the lacrosse offices at Hofstra were renamed in his honor.

For more than 30 years Huff has also been a lacrosse coach on both the high school and collegiate level. He has served as a coach at Hofstra, Suffolk Community College, Syosset High School, Smithtown High School, Smithtown East High School and Eastport South Manor High School, where he currently serves as head coach. In 13 years as a head coach at Smithtown High School, the team won 171 games, 12 league titles and one Suffolk County championship.

Huff and his wife, Lisa, have seven children – Kimberly, Heather, Kerri, Alexis, Ashley, K.J. and Michael. The Huff family resides in Eastport, New York.
