ATH: Hofstra Holds Health & Safety Seminar Featuring Rohan Murphy

Hempstead, NY - On Monday, March 23, the Hofstra University Department of Athletics hosted its Spring Health and Safety Presentation. The event brought in motivational speaker Rohan Murphy, who shared his story about having both of his legs amputated as a child and going on to become a Division I wrestler and graduating from Penn State University.

Murphy spoke with the crowd about difficulties he has experienced in life and how he refuses to let his situation define who he is, and who he wants to become. Murphy's message of not making excuses was extremely powerful and his goal in meeting with schools throughout the country is to inspire students to work hard to accomplish their goals. Prior to meeting with all of Hofstra's student-athletes and coaches, Murphy conducted a seperate presentation with the Hofstra Wrestling Team in the Teague Ryan Wrestling Complex.

"We are so thankful to Rohan for his inspirational speech at our Spring Health and Safety Seminar," commented Hofstra Vice President and Director of Athletics Jeffrey A. Hathaway. "To overcome so much, dedicate himself to becoming an NCAA Division I wrestler at Penn State and now as a tremendous motivational speaker is evidence that Rohan achieves all that he sets out to do. His speech truly motivated our student-athletes, coaches and administrators here at Hofstra University. Rohan's words will continue to resonate within our athletic program as we continue to become champions in the classroom, in the competitive venues and in the community."

"We were extremely humbled," said Isabel Hansbury, a freshman on the Pride Softball team. "Rohan's story provided us with a new outlook on day-to-day things such working out, competing and many other things we take for granted as student-athletes. It definitely makes you think about the opportunity we all have here at Hofstra."

The presentation is a part of the Hofstra University Department of Athletics mission to provide a well-rounded development program for student-athletes. Each semester a seminar is held to provide student-athletes with information to assist in personal development and growth. The event was attended by student-athletes, coaches, staff and administrators and was held in the Margiotta Hall Theater.
