BB: Ferguson, Foster Help Hofstra Earn Split With Delaware

Newark, DE - Eric Ferguson went 5-5 and hit for the cycle, and Steven Foster added three hits including a grand slam home run as Hofstra split a doubleheader with a 12-7 win in the nightcap. Delaware won the opener, 9-2.

The Pride moved to 5-10 overall and 2-3 in the Colonial Athletic Association with the split. Delaware fell to 8-5, 1-1.

Delaware held a 5-3 lead in game two heading into the sixth inning. That is when Hofstra erupted for eight runs. Ferguson got things started with a leadoff double. After a groundout, Chris Weiss had an RBI double to make it 5-4. After a walk and a single loaded the bases, Delaware reliever Kevin Miley got the second out on a strikeout. But Foster then delivered his first career home run, a grand slam to right, to put the Pride up, 8-5. Brad Witkowski followed with a single, stole second and came in on David Leiderman's double. Ferguson then homered to left for an 11-5 lead.

A pair of errors in the seventh gave the Pride a 12-5 lead before the Blue Hens scored twice in the bottom of the eighth to account for the final score.

The Pride racked up 17 hits in the win with Leiderman adding three hits and Weiss and Dalton Rouleau two each.

Ferguson's cycle was the first for the Pride since Ricky Caputo did it against St. Peter's on May 4, 2005.

Chris Bonk (2-2) picked up the win after allowing six hits and five runs (three earned) over five innings. Bowie Matteson pitched the final four innings and gave up two runs on seven hits for his second save.

Miley (2-1) took the loss for Delaware, allowing four runs on three hits in a third of an inning. Diaz Nardo had three hits and two runs scored for the Blue Hens.

In game one, a four-run third inning boosted the Delaware lead to 5-0. The inning started out great for the Pride as starter Nick Kozlowski induced the first two batters to pop up in the infield. But Gary Jones then singled, stole second and scored on Nardo's single. After a walk put runners on first and second, Tyler Powell singled to push across a second run in the inning. Two consecutive walks forced in a third run and then Joe Giacchino singled in the final run.

Nardo homered in the fourth to make it 6-0 in favor of the home team. Hofstra scored twice in the seventh with Brian MacDonald (sacrifice fly) and Ryan Donovan (RBI single) collecting the RBIs. But Delaware plated three runs in the eighth to close out the scoring and end any thoughts of a Hofstra comeback. Jones' two-run home run was the big hit in the inning.

Kozlowski (1-3) took the loss for Hofstra, allowing five runs on seven hits and four walks in 2 2/3 innings of work. Adam Davis (2-1) allowed six hits and two runs in 6 1/3 innings for Delaware, striking out seven.

The teams conclude their series Sunday at 1 p.m.
