Hempstead, NY - Hofstra gave up a two-run lead in the top of the ninth, but rallied to win it with two runs in the ninth without the benefit of a base hit in a 6-5 win over UMass Lowell Monday evening at Mitchel Athletic Field.
Hofstra snapped a two-game losing streak with the win and improved to 4-8 on the season. The River Hawks fell to 3-7 on the year.
The teams traded runs in the third and fifth innings before Hofstra took a 3-2 lead in the sixth as
Jake Fallon drew a one-out walk, stole second, then stole third and scored on a throwing error by the UMass Lowell catcher.
The Pride tacked on a run in the eighth as
David Leiderman led off with a ground rule double to left center. After a foul out, Fallon reached on a bunt single that sent Leiderman to third. The throw to first was wild, which allowed Leiderman to come in with Hofstra's fourth run.
But the River Hawks scored three times in the ninth to take a 5-4 lead. The first two batters were hit by
Brendan Mulligan pitches and Danny Mendick tied the game with a triple to the fence in right center. Mulligan got two strikeouts before Mendick came in on a passed ball to put the visitors on top. But
Brian MacDonald came on in relief and got himself out of a bases-loaded jam to keep it a one-run game.
That set the stage for Hofstra to take advantage of UMass Lowell's lack of pitching control in the bottom of the frame.
Brad Witkowski and
Ryan Donovan were hit by Steve Xirinachs pitches to start the inning and
David Leiderman walked to load the bases.
Eric Ferguson drove in the tying run the hard way, taking a Xirinachs pitch off the arm. Tim Fallon came on to face
Jake Fallon (no relation) and uncorked a wild pitch on his first offering that allowed pinch-runner
Jesse Russo to score the winning run.
Leiderman,
Chris Weiss and
Steven Foster each had two hits for the Pride. MacDonald (1-1) earned the win in relief for the Pride. Starter
Adam Heidenfelder went five innings and allowed two runs on five hits with six strikeouts.
Joe Consolmagno had two of UMass Lowell's seven hits and also knocked in two runs. Xirinachs (0-1) took the loss for the River Hawks, allowing four runs on four hits over three innings.
The teams combined to hit 13 batters in the game, which tied the NCAA Division I record for a single game. Hofstra pitchers plunked six UMass Lowell batters, while seven Pride hitters were hit. There were also 10 wild pitches with each team collective five.Â
Hofstra is back in action Tuesday at Fordham. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
