WBB: Hofstra Downs Tribe To Advance To CAA Championship Semifinals On Saturday

Upper Marlboro, Md. – Sophomore forward Anjie White tied career-highs with 17 points and 12 rebounds and sophomore guard Krystal Luciano scored a season-high 16 points to lift Hofstra to a 64-51 victory over William & Mary in the Colonial Athletic Association Championship quarterfinals on Friday night from Show Place Arena.

White posted a double-double in her first career CAA Tournament game by scoring 12 points in the second half. Luciano tied a career high with nine rebounds and posted four assists and two steals Third-seeded Hofstra improved to 19-11 while sixth-seeded William & Mary fell to 15-15.  Hofstra advanced to the semifinals for the second time in three seasons and fourth time since joining the CAA for the 2001-02 season.

Hofstra will now take on seventh-seeded Delaware, which has won two games in two days after playing in the first round and upsetting second-seeded Drexel in the earlier quarterfinals. The Pride and Blue Hens will square off on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in a game televised by the American Sports Network and locally in the New York metropolitan area on SNY. The game will also be available via Pride Productions online (subject to blackout). WRHU (88.7 FM) will carry the game starting with a 3 p.m. pregame.

Tough defense forced W&M into a rough shooting night from the floor. The Tribe connected on just 19-of-60 shots from the floor (31.7 percent) and 6-for-19 three-pointers (31.6 percent).
White's free throws and high-arching jumper sustained a 6-0 run for Hofstra as the Pride went ahead, 39-24, just 2:34 into the second half to prompt W&M to call timeout. That provided a cushion, though the Tribe moved within 12 at the final media timeout, cutting Hofstra's lead to 56-44.

W&M would never move closer than 10 points, as Hofstra saw a total team effort that saw seven players corral multiple rebounds. Freshman forward Ashunae Durant, who was named the CAA's Rookie of the Year entering the tournament, added 12 points andsix rebounds. White registered her fourth double-double of the season in 32 minutes and also contributed four steals.

The Pride opened a 20-point advantage at the under-12 media timeout for the high-water mark of the day. Sophomore forward Elo Edeferioka supported White in the frontcourt with six points and five rebounds.

Hofstra forced the Tribe to miss 9-of-11 shots in taking a 16-8 lead through the midway point of the first quarter. The Pride's man-to-man defense helped Hofstra twice put the team ahead by as much as nine in the opening half.

William & Mary moved within one point, though Hofstra used outside shooting to go into halftime with momentum. Eight players scored points for the Pride in the opening 20 minutes to give Hofstra a 31-23 halftime lead.

Luciano hit a three pointer and used the glass on layup for five consecutive points and junior Sydni Epps hit a left-corner jumper on the Pride's last possession of the half for the lead. Both teams used a deep bench in the opening half; playing 10 players apiece.

The Pride built on a halftime edge to improve to 18-0 when leading at the break. Hofstra improved to 2-1 in the season series against the Tribe and is 25-9-1 in the all-time matchup.
White last scored 17 points in a game against W&M when she reached that figure on Feb. 8. She also posted 12 rebounds in that game, giving her two best career statistical games against the Tribe in the same season. Luciano recorded nine rebounds for the third time in her career and the first since the CSSU game on Nov. 14.

Hofstra lost the two regular season meetings against Delaware, including a 64-53 road loss on Jan. 15 and a 73-62 home defeat on Feb. 1.
