MBB: Hofstra Dominates Charleston In Home Finale

Hempstead, NY - Senior Moussa Kone, who was playing in his final regular season home game, recorded game-highs of 16 points and 10 rebounds and four Pride players scored in double figures in a 73-40 win over the College of Charleston Wednesday night at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex.

Hofstra improved to 19-11 overall and 10-7 in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Cougars fell to 8-22 overall and 3-14 in league play.

Neither team could get their offense going at the start of the game, though the Pride held a 10-8 lead nine minutes into the contest. Kone accounted for eight of the 10 points, including a dunk off a feed from junior Juan'ya Green.

Over the next five minutes, Hofstra went on a 12-2 run to take a 22-10 lead with six minutes remaining. Junior Ameen Tanksley was the offensive catalyst during the run, scoring eight of the Pride's 12 points. The offenses cooled during the final six minutes, though Hofstra outscored the Cougars, 9-4 the rest of the way to take a 17-point lead into halftime, 31-14.

Charleston scored the first six points of the second half to cut the deficit to 11, 31-20. But consecutive three-pointers from Nesmith, Green and red-shirt sophomore Brian Bernardi pushed the lead to 20, 40-20, with 16:34 to go. The Pride would not look back from their as the lead grew to as many as 36, 71-35, with 1:59 to play.

The 40 points allowed was the lowest total Hofstra has allowed in a CAA game since joining the league in 2001. It was also the first time Hofstra held an opponent under 50 points since giving up 49 to Towson on February 1, 2012.

In addition to Kone, Tanksley scored 15 points, while Bernardi added 12 points and Green chipped in with 10 points and eight assists. Nesmith, who was also playing in his final home game, scored seven points and grabbed seven rebounds. Bernardi also had a career-high seven rebounds.

Donovan Gilmore and Joe Chealey paced the Cougars with 11 points each. Adjehi Baru pulled down a team-leading seven rebounds. The 40 points scored by Charleston matched a season low, equaling its total in a 67-40 loss at Miami (FL) on December 30.

Hofstra closes out the regulars season Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. at James Madison. The game will be broadcast locally on SportsNet New York (SNY).
