BB: Hofstra Battles, But Falls To No. 11 UCLA

Los Angeles, CA – Freshman Mat Annunziata went 4-5 with two doubles and three RBIs and senior Dalton Rouleau collected three hits and two RBIs in a losing effort as Hofstra dropped a 11-7 decision to 11th-ranked UCLA Sunday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

The win completed a three-game sweep for UCLA (3-0). Hofstra fell to 0-3.

The Bruins jumped out to a 4-0 lead after one inning. Two walks and a double from Ty Moore made it 2-0 and Chris Keck followed with a two-run home run for a 4-0 lead. UCLA would add a fifth run in the fourth inning without the benefit of a hit as Christopher Bono walked, moved to second on a wild pitch, stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly from Trent Chatterton.

UCLA would add two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth to go up 10-0 before Hofstra rallied in the seventh. The Pride would score five runs in the inning to cut the deficit in half. Ryan Donovan led off the inning with a walk and went to second on David Leiderman's single. Annunziata delivered an RBI double to put Hofstra on the board and after a groundout, Jake Fallon plated the second run with a single. Following a pitching change, Niko Hagerty reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases. Steven Foster walked to force in Hofstra's third run and Rouleau came through with a two-run single to make it a 10-5 ball game.

The Bruins got one run back in the eighth on a Bono RBI single that scored Keck. The Pride tried to rally again in the ninth, loading the bases with one out. But the Pride managed just two runs, both coming in on Annunziata's two-run single.

Hofstra starter Nick Kozlowski took the loss, allowing five runs on five hits over 4 1/3 innings. Leiderman and Foster also had two hits for the Pride.

Cody Poteet (1-0) picked up the win for UCLA, allowing four runs on six hits in six innings. Brett Stephens, Moore and Kort Peterson each had two hits for the Bruins.

Hofstra did hold a 13-10 advantage in hits but left nine runners on base.

Hofstra continues its season-opening road trip Wednesday as it begins a five-game series at Hawaii. First pitch is scheduled for 11:35 p.m. (EST).
