Anjie White led three Pride scorers in double-figures with a career-best 16 points, but Delaware used a first half run to take control of the game and held off Hofstra in the second half for a 73-62 Colonial Athletic Association victory Sunday at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex.
The Blue Hens, which received a career-high 31 points from Erika Brown, used a 13-2 run late in the first half to take an 11-point lead and never trailed the rest of the way.
Hofstra fell to 13-8 on the season, 6-4 in the CAA. Delaware improved to 10-11 overall and 5-5 in league play.
Trailing by seven at halftime, Hofstra drew to within three, 39-36, following a 6-0 run. But Delaware responded with six straight points to get its advantage back to nine, 45-36, with 15:28 remaining. The lead grew to 11, 53-42, following a three-point play from Hannah Jardine with 12:56 to play. Â
The Blue Hens went up by 13, 55-42, with 11:04 to play on a jumper from Brown and then took a 58-43 lead following a three-pointer from Jardine with 10:13 remaining.
The Pride cut their deficit to six, 58-52, with 7:22 to play after a 9-0 run that featured six consecutive points from freshman
Ashunae Durant. The Pride would pull within five points, 65-60, on a three-pointer from
Kelly Loftus with 1:27 to play. But the Blue Hens beat the shot clock on their next possession with Brown sinking a jumper to put Delaware back up by seven.
Delaware, which shot 52 percent in the opening 20 minutes, held a 37-30 advantage at halftime following a first half that featured four tie scores and five lead changes. The Pride led by as many as six, 14-8, with 13:29 left on a jumper in the paint from White. But Delaware responded with an 11-4 run to take a 19-18 lead with 9:37 to play. The Blue Hens would go up by as many as 11 in the half, 34-23 with 2:53 remaining. Hofstra would outscore the Blue Hens, 7-3, from that point to go into intermission down seven.
Elo Edeferioka scored four points for the Pride in the run, while Loftus had three points. The Pride had cut the deficit to four before Brown drained a three-pointer for Delaware with two seconds remaining.
In addition to her 16 points, White added seven rebounds and one blocked shot. Durant had 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds, while Loftus chipped in with 12 points.
Brown's 31 points were the highest by a Blue Hen player this season and the sophomore guard also contributed seven rebounds and three steals. Jardine had 13 points in the contest while Joy Caracciolo poured in 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
Following their hot-shooting first half, the Blue Hens cooled off in the second which allowed the Pride to extend their streak of not allowing an opponent to shoot 50-percent in a game to 52 consecutive contests. The last opponent to shoot at least 50-percent in a game against the Pride was Northeastern on March 6, 2013.
Hofstra returns to action Friday when it hosts league-leading James Madison at 7 p.m.
