MBB: Battle Of Long Island Next Up; Hofstra Heads East To Stony Brook

Hempstead, NY – The Hofstra Men's Basketball team will make the short trek east on Sunday when the Pride takes on Long Island rival Stony Brook at 2 p.m. from Island Federal Credit Union Arena.

For the first time since 2008-09, Hofstra will head east on the Long Island Expressway for a road game as the teams are meeting in Stony Brook for the first time since a 61-56 Pride win during the 2008-09 season.

Hofstra will bring a solid 6-3 record into the game against the Seawolves. The Pride just saw its recent three-game win streak come to an end in an 81-68 loss at Siena on December 9. It was the Pride's second three-game win streak of the season as they opened the 2015-16 campaign with three straight victories.

Senior forward Ameen Tanksley had a solid outing against the Saints as he tied for game-high honors with 22 points, while also adding a team-best eight rebounds. He was one of three players in double figures as graduate forward Denton Koon had 12 points and eight rebounds, while senior guard Juan'ya Green tallied 12 points and four assists.

Four players average in double figures for Hofstra as Green is tops on the team with 17.6 per outing, while Tanksley has closed the gap and is averaging 16.7 points per game. Also in double figures is junior guard Brian Bernardi (14.8) and Koon (11.6).

Hofstra has an impressive quartet of rebounders as well as sophomore center Rokas Gustys leads the way with 8.6 per game, while Koon (6.7), senior forward Malik Nichols (6.2) and Tanksley (5.4) all average at least five caroms per contest.

Green is the Pride's top player in both assists and steals as he is averaging seven assists and 1.8 steals per game.

Stony Brook is 4-4 heading into a game at American on Thursday. Jameel Warney is having another outstanding season with team-highs of 19.3 points and 12.3 rebounds per contest. Carson Puriefoy is second with 12.6 points per game, while Rayshaun McGrew ranks third with an average of 10.4 points per outing. Ahmad Walker is averaging a team-high 5.3 assists per game.

The series between Hofstra and Stony Brook has been dominated by the Pride over time as Hofstra leads, 19-4. The all-time meetings between the teams began in 1972-73 and Hofstra has won three straight meetings. In last season's exciting contest - graduate guard Dion Nesmith's jumper from just outside the free throw line with 1.6 seconds to play gave Hofstra a 66-65 win over Stony Brook on November 21, 2014. That game marked the first between the two schools since December 10, 2008.

Following the game against the Seawolves, Hofstra will have a short turnaround before hosting Florida Atlantic on Tuesday, December 22 at 7 p.m. That game will start a three-game home stand for the Pride as they will also host Sacred Heart on December 28 before opening Colonial Athletic Association play on December 31 at 1 p.m. against Delaware.
