MBB: Huge Second Half Run Lifts Hofstra Past St. Bonaventure

St. Bonaventure, NY – Senior forward Ameen Tanksley scored a season-high 24 points, senior guard Juan'ya Green added 23 points and nine assists and the Hofstra Men's Basketball team used a 16-1 run midway through the second half to defeat St. Bonaventure, 89-83, on Saturday at the Reilly Center.

Hofstra improved to 4-2 with the important road win over Atlantic-10 member St. Bonaventure. The Bonnies dropped to 3-2 with the loss.

The Pride was an impressive 28-33 from the free throw line in the game as Green was a perfect 10-10 and Tanksley was 10-11.

Hofstra faced a pair of ten-point deficits in the opening half, including the last time at 33-23 before making a rally. Down by eight with 1:17 remaining in the stanza, graduate forward Denton Koon drained a three-pointer and Green added two free throws with four seconds left to offset a jumper from Jaylen Adams and make it a five-point game (42-37) at the break.

Following a basket from the Bonnies' Marcus Posley with 11:36 left in regulation that made it 59-57 in favor of the home team, Green would start the game-changing run that would put the Pride in front. From the 11:21 mark until 6:41 was left in the second stanza, Hofstra would outscore St. Bonaventure, 16-1, to turn a two-point deficit into a 13-point advantage at 73-60. Senior forward Malik Nichols and sophomore center Rokas Gustys each had four points during the run to lead the way.

Hofstra would still hold a double digit lead with nearly three minutes remaining before St. Bonaventure used an 11-2 run to make it 81-80 with 37 seconds remaining. The Pride would seal the victory from the charity stripe as Hofstra was 8-8 from the free throw line in the final minute to earn the win.

Koon added 14 points and seven rebounds for Hofstra, while Gustys chipped in with 12 points and seven rebounds. Nichols made some big energy plays throughout the game for the Pride and finished with nine points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

Adams led the Bonnies with 24 points and five assists. Posley had 22 points and seven rebounds, while Dion Wright tallied a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Hofstra is back in action on Wednesday when it heads to La Salle for a 7 p.m. contest. The game will be a homecoming of sorts for Head Coach Joe Mihalich, who is a 1978 graduate of La Salle.
