VB: Hofstra's Season Ends In CAA Quarterfinals

Harrisonburg, VA - A wonderful season for the Hofstra Volleyball team came to an end Friday night as the fourth-seeded Pride lost to fifth-seeded College of Charleston, 3-2, in the quarterfinals of the Colonial Athletic Association Championship at Sinclair Gymnasium.

Hofstra battled back from an 0-2 deficit in the match to force a fifth set and seemed poised to defeat the Cougars for the third time this season, but a late rally enabled Charleston to claim victory. Set scores were 27-25, 25-22, 18-25, 25-27, 15-13. The Pride, which had nine new players this season, finished the 2015 campaign with a 21-11 record and shared the regular season CAA Championship. Charleston, which advances to face top-seeded James Madison in the semifinals, improved to 19-12 on the year.

Freshman Nanishka Perez led the Pride with 18 kills. The CAA All-Rookie selection also added 11 digs and three blocks. Sophomore Leticia Valente, a second team All-CAA pick, had 16 kills and a career-high 12 blocks, while freshman Michaela Rucli posted 12 kills, a .611 hitting percentage and six blocks. Junior Veronika Kostova, who also earned second team All-CAA honors, was in double-figure kills as well with 13 and had four blocks. CAA Setter of the Year Hannah Klemm notched 58 assists and 11 digs.

The teams battled neck-and-neck through the first two sets. Hofstra fought off three set points in the first stanza before finally falling, 27-25. The second set saw Hofstra score the first four points before Charleston rallied. The set featured 15 tie scores, though Charleston would score four of the last five points for a 25-22 win. Set three saw Hofstra score five straight points to snap a 12-12 tie en route to the 25-18 victory.

Things seemed dire for the Pride in the fourth set, trailing 20-13. But Hofstra battled back and held a 24-22 lead. The Cougars staved off set point twice, though with the score tied at 25 senior Kaitlyn Krause's service ace and Perez' kill gave the Pride a 27-25 win.

The fifth set was close all the way through with neither team holding more than a two-point advantage. The score was tied at 13 before Krissy Mummey snapped the tie with a kill, and Kennedy Madison and Kayla Tronick combined on a block to give Charleston the win.

Melissa Morello, a CAA First Team selection, led all players with 21 kills. Kennedy added 12 kills, while Devon Rachel picked up 15 digs.
