WBB: Hofstra Edges Navy In Season Opener

Hempstead, NY - Darius Faulk's steal and layup with 13.5 seconds remaining gave Hofstra a 64-63 lead as the Pride picked up a 65-63 win over Navy in the season opener for both teams at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex Friday night.

Hofstra fell behind by eight, 15-7, in the first period. Sarita Condie of Navy scored seven of the Mids points. But the Pride would rally in the second period, outscoring Navy by a 25-15 margin to take a 41-36 lead at the break. Jakelle King-Gilchrist scored 10 of her 15 first half points in the period, including a jumper in the paint that put Hofstra up, 35-33, with 2:48 to play.

Hofstra sophomore Ashunae Durant, the reigning CAA Rookie of the Year, dominated the third period with 11 of the Pride's 13 points. Durant would finish with 17 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

Navy would chip away at the Pride's lead in the fourth period and went ahead, 60-58, with 2:50 to play on three-point play from Condie. After the Pride tied the score at 60 on a Durant layup, Taylor Dunham put the Mids back up with a three-pointer with 1:06 to play. After Anjie White cut the deficit to one, 63-62, with 34 seconds to play, Faulk played the hero role as she stripped Condie of the ball and went in uncontested to put Hofstra up for good. After a missed three-pointer by Navy, Faulk added a free throw with six seconds left to account for the final victory margin.

Condie and Dunham tied Durant for game-high honors in scoring with 17 points each, while Ashanti Kennedy led Navy with 10 rebounds.

Hofstra held a commanding 52-32 advantage on the boards and had 32 second chance points to Navy's 14.

Hofstra returns to action Tuesday night at home versus Stony Brook. Game time is at 7 p.m.
