WSOC: Five Different Goal-Scorers Power Hofstra to 5-1 Win Over Charleston

Hempstead, N.Y. – Senior Chloe Dale tallied her first career goal to stake Hofstra to an early lead and the Pride scored four straight goals in the second half to post a convincing 5-1 win over the College of Charleston on Sunday afternoon at Hofstra Soccer Stadium.

Five different goal scorers led a balanced attack that featured goals from Kristin Desmond, Leah Galton, Madeline Anderson and freshman Sabrina Barton's first career strike. Hofstra out-shot the Cougars, 19-4, in the second half in improving to 9-4 overall and 3-1 in conference play. Katie Grunder's 87th-minute goal was Charleston's only offense as the Cougars fell to 8-5 and 2-2.

Galton and Desmond each posted three-point games to help Hofstra move to 4-0 in the all-time series against CofC. Grunder's goal was the only play that prevented the Pride from recording a 5-0 win for a second consecutive year as Hofstra also bested the Cougars by five on the road last season.

Dale's header off junior Emily Agudelo's right-side free kick opened the scoring at 17:22. It was also a milestone for the Birmingham, England native. Dale, a four-year starter who has thrived in a defensive midfield spot, scored her first goal in her 75th career game.

That gave Hofstra a 1-0 lead in a tightly contested opening half that saw each team log six shots. But Hofstra pulled away coming out of the break, holding a 9-0 edge in second-half corners. Galton extended her CAA-leading goal total to 10 when she headed in Desmond's cross in the 60th minute for the two-goal edge.

Desmond then linked with junior Jill Mulholland in the 68th minute for a 3-0 lead. Mulholland's outlet pass sprung Desmond, who beat Charleston goalkeeper Lauren Killian for her season's fourth goal.

Hofstra scored for a second time off the corner when senior Jeannine Molleda's kick went into the six-yard box. Galton gained control and Anderson then converted by scoring the short-range goal. Despite serving as starting defender, Anderson already has three goals.

Barton, a freshman, was only playing in her seventh career game but extended Hofstra's lead to 5-0 by notching her first career goal off the bench. Charleston misplayed the ball and Barton pounced on the opportunity, getting the steal and finding the vacant net.

Junior goalkeeper Friederike Mehring made one save in 90 minutes. Killian gave up three goals in 72:13 before giving way to Genevieve Henderson, who surrendered two goals in 17:47.

Hofstra will now play three consecutive CAA road games, starting on Friday with a 3 p.m. contest.
