WSOC: Hofstra Wins CAA Regular Season Title With 1-0 Victory Over Drexel

Hempstead, N.Y. – Sophomore Emily Hulbert came off the bench to score a key 44th-minute goal and junior goalkeeper Friederike Mehring  made a key save for her second straight shutout as Hofstra clinched the Colonial Athletic Association regular season championship with a 1-0 win over Drexel Sunday afternoon.

Hofstra improved to 7-1-1 in conference play and 13-4-1 overall. Combined with William & Mary's tie at James Madison, the Pride locked up the top seed and will host the CAA Championship semifinals and finals from Nov. 6-8 at Hofstra Soccer Stadium. William & Mary earned the second seed as the Pride and Tribe both will have byes into the semifinals. Third-seeded UNCW will host sixth-seeded Delaware in the quarterfinals as fourth-seeded James Madison will host fifth-seeded Northeastern in the other quarterfinal game on Nov. 1.

Hulbert scored off a cross as both sophomore Kristin Desmond and junior Jill Mulholland picked up the assists at 43:30. That goal was the difference in a game that eliminated Drexel from tournament contention. The Dragons ended the 2015 season 9-9 overall and 3-6.

Hulbert, who scored two goals as a freshman, netted her first of the season less than seven minutes after substituting into the game. Hofstra nearly scored the game-opening goal when senior Jeannine Molleda's hard head-on shot drilled the crossbar and went towards the sideline.

Mehring saved Wilhelmina Hauch-Fausboll's header in the 15th minute, which was the only on-target shot the Pride defense allowed all game. Mehring posted her second straight shutout after also blanking Delaware on Friday. Mehring has four shutouts this season, matching her personal high set in 2014. She has nine individual clean sheets for her career.

A backline featuring freshman Madeline Anderson, junior Emily Agudelo, sophomore Rhian Cleverly and senior Mallory Ullrich limited the Dragons to only that one shot on goal. Sophomore Katie Gerdes came off the bench and played on the back line and later up front after she subbed in for freshman Jenn Buoncore.

A Hofstra Soccer program earned the CAA's regular season title for a second straight day. The men's team clinched the top spot with a win over nationally ranked Elon on Saturday for Head Coach Richard Nuttall. The Hofstra Women's team, led by Head Coach Simon Riddiough, will be hosting the CAA Tournament for the first time since 2010, which also marked the last time the Pride won the league's regular season championship.

Hofstra has won the CAA regular season crown three times in history with the 2015 squad joining the 2003 and 2010 teams. The Pride hosted the CAA Championship in each of those two seasons. Riddiough coached the 2010 team and was an assistant on the 2003 squad.

Before the game, the Pride honored seniors Chloe Dale, Leah Galton, Molleda, Ullrich and Mulholland. Mulholland took a medical redshirt following a season-ending injury in 2013 and has one season of eligibility remaining for 2016.
