WSOC: Hofstra Loses Double-Overtime CAA Championship Semifinal Match To JMU

Hempstead, N.Y. – James Madison goalkeeper Ellen Forrest made a career-high 16 saves and Ashley Herndon scored 3:57 into double-overtime as the top-seeded Hofstra Pride fell to the fourth-seeded Dukes, 1-0, in the CAA Championship semifinals on Friday night at Hofstra Soccer Stadium.

Senior forward Leah Galton posted 11 shots for Hofstra and junior midfielder Jill Mulholland added six as the Pride out-shot the Dukes, 31-9. But JMU finally opened the scoring when Herndon headed in Jennie Sroba's cross in the 104th minute. The Dukes advanced to play William & Mary for the CAA title and the NCAA Tournament automatic berth on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. in a game televised by American Sports Network.

Herndon scored her 12th goal of the season and tallied four of JMU's nine total shots. The All-CAA forward also posted three of the four on-target shots.

Hofstra fell to 13-5-1 overall. The Pride won the CAA's regular season title for the first time since 2010 and will now await its fate as a possible at-large selection during Monday's NCAA Division I selection show at 4:30 p.m. JMU improved to 13-6-2.

Galton nearly ended the game when she headed senior Jeannine Molleda's corner kick towards the goal line in the first overtime's final minute. But Forrest jumped and gloved the shot for her 16th and final save. The netminder made 10 saves after halftime for the clean sheet as Hofstra posted 30-plus shots for the third time this season. Molleda was an All-CAA second-team pick earlier in the week and registered two shots on goal in total.

Galton became the first three-time CAA Player of the Year selection on Wednesday and showed those skills by putting five shots on net. The Harrogate, England native is Hofstra's all-time points leader and is still tied for first on the program's all-time assist leaderboard at 26.

Hofstra junior goalkeeper Friederike Mehring made three saves and kept the Pride in contention. Herndon nearly put the Dukes ahead in the 33rd minute before the Hofstra netminder caught a high-velocity shot from nearly 22 yards out. A back line consisting of starting center backs Madeline Anderson and Rhian Cleverly as well as fullbacks Mallory Ullrich and Emily Agudelo helped the Pride post shot advantages of 13-3 in the first half and 16-4 in the second.

Hofstra played JMU in the CAA Championship semifinals for the third straight season. The Pride bested the Dukes, 4-3, on Northeastern's campus last season and lost to JMU in Harrisonburg, Virginia, in 2013.
