WSOC: Hofstra Stays In First Place With 3-0 Win Over Delaware

Hempstead, N.Y. – Two freshmen scored key goals and senior forward Leah Galton tied the program's assist record to keep Hofstra in first place in the Colonial Athletic Association standings with a 3-0 home victory over Delaware Friday night at Hofstra Soccer Stadium.

Junior goalkeeper Friederike Mehring made four saves to post a shutout in helping Hofstra improve to 12-4-1 and 6-1-1 in CAA play. The Pride has 19 points, which is one more than William & Mary with one regular season game remaining. The Tribe holds a game in hand by having two games left. UNCW has 16 points with one game remaining.

Hofstra is earning votes in the latest NSCAA national poll and is 6-1 at home.

Sophomore Kristin Desmond scored the opening goal and freshman Jamie Delaney and Jenn Buoncore added the insurance markers. Delaware goalkeeper Kelsey O'Donnell suffered a bloody nose but toughed out and played all 90 minutes and made 13 saves, though the Blue Hens dropped to 7-8-2 and 2-4-2.

Desmond, who entered the week leading the CAA in assists, scored a goal by linking with senior midfielder Jeannine Molleda in the fifth minute. Molleda sent a left-side cross that Desmond headed in for her fifth goal at 4:48.

Galton already set Hofstra's all-time points record this season and reached the top of the assist list by tallying her 26th career helper. That tied the most in program history with Jerilyn Marinan's record set from 1997-00. Galton now has 120 career points and her 47 goals leaves her three shy of tying Sam Scolarici's all-time mark in that category.

Galton made the record books by setting up Delaney for her first career goal in the 35th minute. Delaney, playing in her 15th career game, entered the game in the 32nd minute and immediately gave the Pride a boost off the bench by linking with Galton for the 2-0 lead before halftime. Her goal to the left side marked her first two career points.

Hofstra improved to 7-0 when leading at halftime, which Buoncore helped ensure when she scored off junior midfielder Jill Mulholland's cross in front. Buoncore's second goal this season was part of a Hofstra barrage in which the team out-shot the Blue Hens, 29-8, including 16-6 in the second half. O'Donnell made eight second-half saves to keep the deficit from becoming worse.

Mehring earned her third individual shutout of the season and has been part of four clean sheets after combing with Carolyn Carrera to blank Central Connecticut on Sept. 6. Mehring posted four shutouts as a sophomore and has eight in her career.

Hofstra will continue its pursuit of the regular season title and top seed in the CAA Championship on Senior Day Sunday at 1 p.m. versus Drexel. The Pride will honor Galton, Molleda, Chloe Dale, Mallory Ullrich and Mulholland (who has one season of eligibility remaining due to an injury redshirt) before the game in a special ceremony.
