WSOC: Hofstra Takes Over First Place In OT Win At Northeastern

Brookline, Mass. –  Hofstra junior midfielder Jill Mulholland scored the game-opening goal and rocketed a high-velocity shot for the game-winner 5:26 into overtime to lift Hofstra to a 2-1 road overtime victory over Northeastern Friday evening at Parsons Field.

Senior forward Leah Galton assisted on both of Mulholland's goals and Hofstra held Northeastern's second-ranked offense to just one on-target shot. Both teams entered the contest receiving votes in the latest NSCAA national poll and Hofstra pulled ahead of Northeastern for sole possession of first place atop the CAA table at 5-1-1. Hofstra improved to 11-4-1 overall while Northeastern dropped to 4-2-1 and 11-5-1. Both teams have two regular season games remaining and Hofstra now holds the tiebreaker.

The top-six finishers in the 10-team league qualify for the CAA Championship and the top seed earns the right to host the semifinal and championship rounds.

Mulholland broke a scoreless deadlock on a 67th-minute short range goal but Northeastern's Breeana Koemans scored on her team's first shot on goal off an 86th minute free kick to send the game past regulation.

Galton set up Mulholland's sixth goal; a turn-around shot from eight yards out was pushed to the net's low-right side. Hofstra did not allow a shot on goal until Koemans capitalized on a Hofstra foul by scoring her fourth goal at 85:39 to send the game into overtime.

A rematch of the 2014 CAA Championship title game featured tight defensive efforts from both squads as the Pride moved to 12-8-2 in the all-time series. Northeastern, the defending champion, lost for just the second time at home this season and the first in league play to snap a four-game winning streak overall. Northeastern had been 5-0-1 in overtime games before the Pride earned the win.

Mulholland's sixth goal tied her freshman output in 2012 for a career-best and her game-winner from 20 yards out set a new personal best at seven. Galton notched her 24th and 25th career assist, moving her within one of Jerilyn Marinan's (1997-00) team record of 26. Galton extended her program-best point total to 119. She now has a league-leading 27 points.

Mulholland galvanized the Pride by notching her second career two-goal game. Both of those efforts have come this season as Mulholland also scored twice against CCSU on Sept. 6.

Northeastern had scored the second-most goals in the CAA behind only Hofstra. But the league's top two highest-scoring offenses instead fought for chances. Hofstra's  back line featuring sophomores Katie Gerdes and Rhian Cleverly, freshman Madeline Anderson and junior Emily Agudelo kept a Northeastern offense that scored 31 goals in 16 games to no shots on goal through regulation's first 84 minutes before the Huskies broke through when Carina Deandreis made a touch pass to Koemans for the set-piece goal.

Northeastern goalkeeper Nathalie Nidetch posted four saves.

Hofstra looked to break the deadlock when Galton raced down the right side, drew two defenders and fed a centering pass that sophomore Kristin Desmond shot into Nidethc's arms in the 60th minute.

Both teams rang shots off the goal frame but couldn't break though in a scoreless opening half. Hofstra registered the only two on-target shots in the period, though the best chances came when Hofstra senior Jeannine Molleda ripped a shot that clashed off the left post and out four minutes in.
Galton's close-range shot was blocked in the seventh minute. Hofstra registered the game's first five shots before Carly Wilhem's right-flank shot nailed the crossbar and bounced out in the 34th minute.

Gerdes made her first career start in 24 games, starting on defense at full back.

The Pride is 10-0 when scoring the first goal this season and 11-0 when scoring at least two goals.

Hofstra will conclude the regular season with two consecutive home games, starting on Friday, Oct. 23 versus Delaware at 7 p.m. before hosting Drexel on Oct. 25 at 1 p.m. on senior day.
