Hempstead, NY - Hofstra swept all six singles matches and won the doubles point as the Pride won their season-opening dual match, 7-0, over Wagner at the Hofstra Outdoor Tennis Center Sunday afternoon.
Hofstra improved to 1-0 on the season, while Wagner slipped to 3-2.
Sarah Bowen and
Carmen Pestano opened doubles with a 6-2 win at the first flight over Marina Rull-Valvieso and Avika Sagwal.
Michelle Kaplan and
Sarah Catherine Herndon earned a 6-3 win over Carolyn Gibson and Madison Pautsch at second doubles. The Seahawks did win at third doubles as Samantha Hodges and Rina Baynes defeated
Giulia Leone and
Ria Shah, 6-2.
The Pride won all six singles matches in straight sets. Leone and Baynes played the most competitive match at fourth singles as both sets went to a tiebreaker. Leone prevailed 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-1). Bowen posted a 7-5, 6-4 win over Rull-Valvieso at first singles, while Kaplan downed Sagwal at second singles, 6-4, 6-4.
Pestano blanked Hodges, 6-0, 6-0, at third singles. Herndon defeated Pautsch, 6-0, 6-2 at fifth singles, while
Disha Yallayi made her Hofstra debut with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Gibson at sixth singles.
Hofstra is back in action on October 22 in the ITA Regionals at Hanover, New Hampshire.Â
