WSOC: Galton’s Late Goal Allows Hofstra To Draw Against James Madison

Harrisonburg, Va. – Hofstra senior forward Leah Galton scored the tying goal in the 84th minute to help the Pride earn a point in a 1-1 road tie at James Madison on Sunday afternoon at University Park.

A matchup of the league's top-two goal scorers lived up to the hype when both strikers scored goals in the final nine minutes of regulation. James Madison's Ashley Herndon scored off an 82nd-minute free kick to break a scoreless tie. Galton then responded just 2:13 later to send the game into overtime. Hofstra moved to 10-4-1 overall and 4-1-1 in league play. James Madison is now 9-5-1 and 3-1-1.

Herndon scored her 10th goal after a foul and a yellow card placed the ball just outside the box to the slight-left side. Herndon then fired a shot to the top-left side for her 10th goal of the season.

That strike temporarily matched her with Galton for the league lead before Hofstra's all-time points leader scored her 11th by playing the ball in the box and finishing to the right corner in the 84th minute to once again take the CAA goal-scoring lead. Freshman Jenn Buoncore, who scored her first collegiate goal in Friday's double-overtime win at Towson, assisted on the play. Her fifth assist trails only senior Mallory Ullrich (six) and sophomore Kirstin Desmond (seven) for the most on the team.

Despite going past regulation for the third time in the last four games, Hofstra generated the only three shots in the first overtime period. No shots were taken in the second overtime and the Pride thwarted JMU's 108th-minute corner kick to quell the only possible scoring chance.

JMU goalkeeper Ellen Forrest made six saves. Hofstra junior Friederike Mehring logged two saves as Hofstra started a three-game CAA road swing with four of a possible six points.

The Pride will cap the trip on Friday with a matchup against a Northeastern that is also 4-1-1 in CAA play in a game that could have major implications as to a potential host for the CAA Championship.
