Hempstead, NY - Hofstra and Wagner split six singles matches, but Hofstra won the doubles point to post a 4-3 victory Sunday afternoon at the Hofstra Outdoor Tennis Center. The win improved the Pride's record to 1-0 on the season, while the Seahawks suffered their first defeat in falling to 4-1.
Hofstra opened the match by taking the doubles point as
Niko Vulinovich and
Gustav Akesson defeated Juan Alanis and Lucas Lu, 6-3, at first doubles and
Ricky Hendler and
Marcus Smith downed Eric Poland and Dale Sandy, 6-4, at second doubles. Wagner did win the third doubles matchup as Ilya Kneppelhout and Charlton Boyd posted a 6-3 victory over
Leonardo Pires and
Yahn Gawrit.
Vulinovich, Smith and Hendler each won their singles matches as both teams earned three points in singles action. Vulinovich won at first singles over Alanis, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, while Smith also rallied from a set down in his second flight win over Sandy, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3. Hendler won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, over Poland.
Lu defeated Gawrit at third singles, 2-6, 6-1, 6-4, while Boyd and Kneppelhout had straight set wins at the fifth and sixth flights, respectively. Boyd defeated Akesson, 6-2, 6-3, while Kneppelhout defeated Pires, 6-3, 6-4.
Hofstra returns to action October 22 at the ITA Regionals in New Haven, Connecticut.
