MBB: Balanced Scoring Leads Pride Past Delaware

Hempstead, NY - Freshman Rokas Gustys had his first collegiate double-double with 11 points and 16 rebounds, while juniors Ameen Tanksley and Juan'ya Green and sophomore Brian Bernardi also scored in double figures as Hofstra posted a 71-58 win over Delaware Monday night at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex.

Hofstra improved to 11-4 on the season, 2-0 in the Colonial Athletic Association. The 2-0 start in conference play is Hofstra's best start since opening 5-0 in 2010-11. Delaware, the defending CAA champion, falls to 1-12 on the season and 0-2 in league play. The win was Hofstra's first over the Blue Hens since a 79-60 victory to end the 2010-11 regular season.

Gustys' 16 rebounds were a season-high for any Pride player and his 11 points established a new personal-best. He also added a season-high five blocks in the contest. Green led the Pride with 16 points while Tanksley contributed 15 points. Bernardi had 13 points of 5-9 shooting, including 3-6 from three-point range.

Following a slow start for both squads, Delaware jumped out to a 15-8 lead with 10:41 to play on a jumper from Devonne Pinkard. The Pride responded with a 15-0 run that gave them the lead for good. Tanksley started the spurt with a layup and Bernardi added two three-pointers, including one long shot from the Hofstra Pride logo that extends from center court.

Marvin King-Davis snapped a scoreless drought for the Blue Hens that lasted 6:37 with a layup at the 4:04 mark that cut the Pride lead to 23-17. After Tanksley put the Pride back up by eight, 25-17, with 3:49 to go in the half, Delaware's Kyle Anderson scored five straight points to make it a three-point game (25-22) with 1:47 remaining. But Malik Nichols converted an offensive rebound with 23 seconds left to send Hofstra into the half with a 27-22 advantage.

The Pride opened the second half on a 17-10 run over the first six minutes to take a 44-32 lead. Green would score seven points in the run. The lead would grow to as much as 16 points and Delaware would not get closer than 10 as the Pride cruised to their fourth consecutive victory.

Hofstra, which shot just 31 percent in the first half, rebounded in the second 20 minutes to shot 51 percent (18-35) and finished at 40 percent for the contest. Delaware would also shoot better in the second half as well, posting 43-percent shooting in the final stanza and 38 percent for the game.

Anderson would lead the Blue Hens with 16 points. Chivarsky Corbett added 11 points and Kory Holden had 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds.

Tanksley would pull down nine rebounds for the Pride in addition to his 15 points. Senior Moussa Kone added eight points on the night, including a pair of thunderous dunks late in the second half.

Hofstra is back in action Thursday, when it starts a stretch of three consecutive road games with a 7:30 p.m. matchup at the College of Charleston. The Pride continues the trip to Elon on Saturday and then wraps up the stretch with a January 14 meeting at Northeastern.
