Hempstead, NY - Senior forward
Moussa Kone had his first double-double of the season (and fourth of his career) with 13 points and 11 rebounds, but James Madison overcame a 12-point second half deficit to post a 69-63 win Saturday evening at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex.
Hofstra, which had a chance to move into a first place tie in the Colonial Athletic Association, falls to 14-7 on the season and 5-3 in the CAA. James Madison moves to 12-9 overall and 5-3 in league play.
Junior guard
Juan'ya Green led the Pride with 16 points, while sophomore forward
Jamall Robinson added 10 points.
With the exception of tie scores at 3-3 and 26-26, Hofstra held the lead throughout the opening 20 minutes. The Pride built leads of six, 12-6, on a layup from junior forward
Malik Nichols and then again at 15-9 following a three-pointer from graduate guard
Dion Nesmith. But the Dukes would keep the game within reach and tied the score at 26 on Ron Curry's lay-up with 6:43 to go.
The Pride responded with a half-closing 19-7 run to take a 45-33 lead into the break. The Pride did most of their damage from beyond the arc in the run, connecting on four three-pointers. Green had three of his four three-pointers in the run while Robinson added the fourth. Kone scored five points in the spurt as well.
James Madison would pull within seven, 47-40, early in the second half. But Green drained a three-pointer and, following a Kone block, went coast-to-coast for the layup and put the Pride back up by 12, 52-40 with 16:31 to play.
The Dukes came right back with a 14-0 run to take their first lead of the game, 54-52, on Curry's layup with 9:44 on the clock. Curry would score seven of JMU's 14 points in the spurt.
Robinson would end the Hofstra scoreless drought at 7:05 with a basket to tie the score at 54. Junior guard
Ameen Tanksley gave the Pride back the lead (56-54) with his second field goal of the contest with 8:35 remaining. Tanksley, who averages more than 18 points per game to lead the Pride, sat for all but four minutes of the first half due to foul trouble.
James Madison retook the lead 58-56 on back-to-back baskets from Dimitrije Cabarkapa and Winston Grays. But sophomore guard
Brian Bernardi's three-pointer gave the Pride a 59-58 lead and after Curry tied the score at 59, Kone put Hofstra back on top with a layup. The lead was short-lived as Curry came down the floor and scored on a driving layup in traffic to make it a 61-61 game with 3:39 left on the clock. Curry's free throws with 2:56 on the clock put the Dukes back up by two, 63-61.
Kone would tie the score again at 63 with a put-back after an offensive rebound with 1:56 on the clock, but Yohanny Dalembert put the Dukes up for good, 66-63, with an old-fashioned three-point play with 1:32 remaining. James Madison would hit three of four free throws down the stretch, while Hofstra would not score again after Kone's basket.
Curry led all scorers with 25 points, while also adding six rebounds. Jackson Kent was the only other JMU player in double-figures with 10 points. Grays had nine points, while Dalembert chipped in with seven points and a team-best nine rebounds.
The Pride, which utilized the three-point shot effectively (9-16) in the opening 20 minutes, went cold from long range in the second half and shot just 2-15 from beyond the arc.
Hofstra returns to action Wednesday night, January 28, at William & Mary.
