MBB: Northeastern Defeats Hofstra In Battle Of CAA Heavyweights

Boston, MA – Junior guard Juan'ya Green had his fifth double-double of the season with 21 points and 11 assists but it wasn't enough as the Hofstra Men's Basketball team saw its six-game win streak come to an end in an entertaining 91-83 loss to Northeastern on Wednesday evening at Matthews Arena.

Hofstra falls to 13-5 overall and 4-1 in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play with the loss, while Northeastern improves to 12-5 and 4-1 in league play. The Huskies, who were the preseason CAA favorites, won their third straight game.

Junior forward Ameen Tanksley added 15 points in the contest to give him exactly 1,000 for his career (Niagara and Hofstra).

Scott Eatherton had 21 points for Northeastern.

The teams would go into the break knotted at 43 as the first half featured seven tie and eight lead changes with neither squad able to take a lead larger than five points.

Northeastern took an early 9-5 advantage before Hofstra rallied with five straight, including a three-pointer from Green, to earn a 10-9 lead nearly four minutes into the game.

The Huskies would take their largest lead of the first half at 17-12 after a layup from Zach Stahl but it what would turn out to be a highly-entertaining first half, the Pride battled back. Trailing 19-14 later on in the half, Hofstra scored six of the next seven points in the contest to even the score at 20 after a three-pointer from Tanksley.

The teams would battle back and forth through much of the first half with Hofstra finally earning a slight four-point lead after another Green trifecta with 1:51 showing on the first half clock to make it 41-37 Pride. Northeastern was able to even the score at the break as Eatherton had the Huskies final three baskets, including one at the first half buzzer, to make it 43-all at the break.

Northeastern opened the second half with a three-pointer but Hofstra immediately responded and used a 7-1 scoring run to lead 50-47 with 16:28 left in regulation following a layup from Tanksley.

The second stanza would be just as entertaining as the opening half with neither squad able to push their advantage to more than three until Northeastern scored 11 straight points to turn a 69-68 deficit into a 10-point advantage, 79-69, with 5:48 left in the second half. Caleb Donnelly had four points during the run, including the basket that push the lead to double digits.

A pair of free throws from Tanksley with 3:20 remaining would get Hofstra to within six, 81-75, but Northeastern would hold on for the victory in this battle between CAA heavyweights.

Senior center Moussa Kone added 12 points and five rebounds for Hofstra, which also would get a double-double from Tanksley (added 11 rebounds). It is his second of the season.

David Walker had 22 points for Northeastern, while T.J. Williams had 16 points and 11 rebounds.

Hofstra will start a three-game home stand on Saturday when UNCW visits the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex for a 2 p.m. contest. Hofstra will also host Drexel (1/21) and James Madison (1/24) during the home stand.
