Piscataway, N.J. – Hofstra seniors Maid Memic and Daniel Grundei both scored second-half goals and junior goalkeeper Patric Pray made six saves to lead Hofstra to a 3-1 win over Rutgers in a non-conference matchup on Sunday afternoon.
Sophomore Joseph Holland assisted on all three goals, including sophomore Rory Murphy's first career marker in the 84th minute that provided the Pride with a three-goal cushion.
Memic's first goal of the season 3:52 into the second half helped Hofstra record its first victory of 2014 as the Pride improved to 1-1-2. Grundei, a center back, played a strong two-way game by scoring off a corner kick in the 72nd minute to give Hofstra the victory over a Big 10-member opponent on the road. Rutgers dropped to 2-2.
Murphy scored his first career goal, which was enough as Rutgers only dented the score sheet on Erik Sa's 86th-minute goal ended Pray's shutout bid. The Pride out-shot the Scarlet Knights, 12-5, in the second half
Hofstra defeated at Yurcak Field for a second straight season. The Pride has out-scored the Scarlet Knights, 6-1, since 2013 improved to 5-9 in the all-time series against the Scarlet Knights.
The Pride gave up 15 first-half shots but did not allow a goal. Memic, who finished second in he Colonial Athletic Association in goals in 2013, netted his first of the year early in the half when he finished a give-and-go with Holland off a Rutgers turnover for the 1-0 lead.
In the 72nd minute, Grundei scored off a corner kick to the right post. The former Towson captain, who is in his first season at Hofstra, scored off Holland's kick. Murphy, a fellow defender, fired a shot across the goalmouth in the 84th minute.
Memic and senior Elliott Firth each posted three shots and sophomore Reece Alexander also tied for the team lead with three shots as a reserve. Alexander came off the bench and put two of shots on target.
Pray made four first-half saves. Counterpart David Greczek made seven total saves.
Hofstra will next be in action Thursday with a non-league road game at Fairleigh Dickinson at 7 p.m.
