WSOC: Hofstra Falls To #21 West Virginia

Morgantown, W.Va. – Nationally ranked West Virginia scored all of its goals in the first 17 minutes as Hofstra fell to the Mountaineers, 4-0, in a non-conference game on Friday night at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.

Kailey Utley, Kadeisha Buchanan, Kelsie Maloney and Ashley Lawrence all scored for WVU, which entered the game ranked 21st by the NSCAA as the Mountaineers improved to 3-2. Hofstra, which entered with a two-game winning streak, fell to 2-2 in dropping the opener of the WVU 90 Minute Classic.

Utley scored the opener in the fourth minute when her left-footed strike from 18 yards out nestled inside the right post for her first goal of the season. The Mountaineers then scored three goals in less than five minutes to take a commanding lead. Hofstra fell to 0-3 in the all-time series. It was the first meetings between the schools since the 2005 NCAA Tournament first round.

Buchanan collected a loose ball in the box and shot it in for a 2-0 WVU edge 11:33 into the half. Jess Crowder and Carly Black picked up the assists.

In the 15th minute, Maloney took Kate Schwindel's pass, cut inside and pushed a shot past Hofstra sophomore goalkeeper Friederike Mehring for her second goal of the season. Lawrence then gave WVU a four-goal advantage just 2:21 later when she dribbled past a defender and scored to the far post from nine yards out for her first goal of 2014. WVU scored on all of its first four shots on goal.

Junior forward Leah Galton notched Hofstra's only shot on goal with Hannah Steadman making the save to secure her shutout.

Hofstra will conclude the tournament with a noon game on Sunday versus Indiana State from WVU's campus. The Pride will be playing the Sycamores for the first time.
