Morgantown, W.Va. – Hofstra senior Sam Scolarici posted her second career hat trick to become the program's all-time goal-scoring record to lift Hofstra to a 9-1 victory over Indiana State in the finale of the WVU 90 Minute Classic on Sunday afternoon at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
Scolarici became the first Hofstra player to score 40 career goals and surpassed Christa Eidenweil's 14-year-old school record of 39 goals as Hofstra left WVU's campus with a split in the tournament and a 3-2 overall record. Indiana State dropped to 1-3-2.
Scolarici tallied her first hat trick since Sept. 29, 2013 versus the College of Charleston to make history. Scolarici, who led the Colonial Athletic Association in goals last season, already has three multi-goal games this season and has seven goals in 2014.
Junior forward Leah Galton scored two goals in a game for the second time this season and sophomore midfielder Jill Mulholland added two second-half goals. Hofstra tied a team record for goals in a single game, reaching the nine-goal figure for the first time under head coach Simon Riddiough's nine-season tenure and the first time since a 9-0 road win at Drexel on Sept. 18, 1994.
Mulholland added one of many insurance goals less than two minutes into the second half and helped Hofstra build a possession advantage and contributed a game-high seven shots. Freshman defender Kristin Desmondtallied her first career goal off a 57th-minute header to give Hofstra a 5-0 edge.
The Pride established a 26-12 shot advantage over the Sycamores to help Hofstra win the first all-time meeting between the schools. Indiana State's Sydney Lovelace scored in the 62nd minute to end the shutout bid.
Following Indiana State's goal, Mulholland again found the back of the net off passes from Mulholland and Emily Agudelo at 62:09. Just 28 seconds later, Scolarici tied Eidenweil with her sixth goal of the season. Eidenweil played from 1997-00.
Galton, the reigning Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year, opened the scoring with her second-minute scoring strike in beating Indiana State goalkeeper Brittany San Roman from six yards out. Galton's goal 1:34 in was the warmup act, as the Harrogate, England native added another unassisted goal by use her speed to dribble in and create her own shot, scoring from about 10 yards out in the 27th minute for a 3-0 lead.
Galton has four goals on the season and 23 in her career. She surpassed tied Penny Stansfield (1997-00) for eighth on Hofstra's all-time goals list. Galton also recorded a two-goal game versus Saint Joseph's on Aug. 31.
Scolarici scored the credited game-winning goal 12:44 in. Fellow senior forward Amber Stobbs played a pass through the box to Scolarici, who finished with a strong elevated shot.
Mulholland ensured Hofstra came out of the second half with the same jump that the team showed following opening kickoff. The Levittown, New York native blasted a shot from eight yards out that deflected off a defender and in just 2:04 into the second half.
Desmond, who earned the CAA's Rookie of the Week honors last Monday after picking up her first collegiate point, scored her first career goal when she headed in Agudelo's corner kick for a 57th-minute goal.
Mulholland and Scolarici scored and Hofstra registered its eighth score on an own goal by Indiana State in the 77th minute. Scolarici then made history in the 84th minute. Freshman Jenna Borresen, who made her first two collegiate appearances as a goalkeeper, ensured her debut as a field player was memorable when she assisted on Scolarici's record-breaker. Borresen found the Aldie, Virginia native near the goal line and Scolarici moved herself to the top of the goal-scoring list by finishing from five yards out. Hofstra scored six goals in the second half.
Hofstra will next be in action on Friday against Duke in Charlottesville, Va. in the opener of the Virginia Nike Soccer Classic at 3 p.m.
