Durham, N.H. – Senior Elliott Firth scored two goals in the final 23 minutes but Hofstra couldn't complete its comeback bid in a 3-2 defeat to New Hampshire in a non-conference matchup on Friday night at Bremner Field.Sophomore goalkeeper Brian McPartland made two saves in his first collegiate start and sophomore Joseph Holland earned a point for a fifth straight game. Yet Hofstra fell to 2-3-2 on the season as UNH's Fazal Nabi scored two goals and David Schalatter added the third to stake the Wildcats to a 3-0 lead. UNH's Travis Worra made five saves to lift his team to 3-4.
Nabi put UNH on the scoreboard with an unassisted goal in the 20th minute to break a scoreless tie. He then gave the Wildcats a two-goal cushion in the 37th minute when he linked with Jesus Tudela. UNH took that edge into halftime and added to it in the 67th minute with Tudela facilitating the action again in assisting on David Schlatter's goal.
Hofstra stormed right back just 29 seconds later when Firth scored off an assist from Holland. Holland now has nine points in his last five games.
Firth, a product of Sheffield, England, entered the game with two goals in 23 career games. He matched that total in less than 21 minutes by teaming with sophomore Kyle Poetzsch to cut Hofstra's deficit to a single goal with 2:04 remaining in regulation.
An All-Colonial Athletic Association third team selection in 2013, Firth's first two goals of 2014 gave Hofstra a chance. He went for the hat trick with 1:20 left, though Worra made the save on his shot and UNH closed out the victory.
Hofstra will conclude a stretch of seven of the season's first eight games on the road on Sunday with a noon game at Vermont. The Pride will be playing a former America East rival for the second time in three days and will look to atone for last year's road loss against the Catamounts.
