VB: Hofstra Looks To Continue Winning Ways This Weekend

Live Stats | PRIDE ZONE Live Video/Audio | Twitter | Weekly Notes (PDF)

Hempstead, NY – The Hofstra Volleyball team will look to continue its winning ways as the Pride will host the annual Hofstra Invitational this weekend when they welcome Fordham, Siena and Sacred Heart to the David S. Mack Physical Education Center.

Hofstra (7-1) is currently in the midst of a four-match win streak that has seen the Pride not drop a set during this stretch. It is Hofstra's second extended win streak of the season already as the Pride opened the 2014 campaign with three straight victories.

There will be live video and audio of all the Hofstra matches this weekend via the PRIDE ZONE, along with live statistics as well. Admission to all Hofstra Volleyball matches is free of charge.

The Pride will enter this weekend having just captured the St. Francis Brooklyn Terrier Invitational over the weekend. It was a total team effort for the Pride as several members of the squad played a role in the team winning its three matches.

Leading the way was senior middle blocker Nuria Lopes da Silva, who earned Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Defensive Player of the Week honors after having an outstanding four-match string in the blocking area. She also contributed nicely offensively. Lopes da Silva had 18 blocks last week, averaging 1.50 per set, while also contributing 30 kills and a .463 attack percentage.

One of the Pride's most pleasant surprises this season has been the play of sophomore middle blocker Veronika Kostova, who ranks third on the squad with 62 kills. Kostova, who has a .317 hitting percentage this season, was tremendous in the Pride's final match at the St. Francis Brooklyn tournament as she posted a match-high 14 kills on 18 attempts for a stellar .778 attack percentage.

The march towards history continues for Pride senior outside hitter Kelsie Wills as she now has 1,548 career kills and 980 career digs. She is 106 kills shy of tying the school record and 20 digs shy of becoming only the sixth player in program history to reach at least 1,000 kills and digs in their careers.

Hofstra has made it a habit in recent years of getting off to strong starts and this year is no difference. The Pride's 7-1 start is the team's second-best through eight matches in program history. The 2012, 1989 and 1988 squads all started 8-0, while the 2011 and 1982 teams began the seasons with similar 7-1 marks.

In terms of this week's opponents, Hofstra is 5-4 all-time against Fordham, 9-1 against Siena and 2-0 against Sacred Heart. The Pride faced all three squads in 2013 as they lost a four-set match to Fordham, swept Siena and defeated Sacred Heart in four sets. The Rams enter this week with a 0-6 record, Sacred Heart is 1-5 and Siena is 1-6.
