Kelsie Wills got her 2014 season off to a strong start as she had a match-high 21 kills and added eight digs and three blocks to lead the Hofstra Volleyball team to a four-set (21-25, 25-15, 25-15 and 25-9) win over St. Francis Brooklyn in the opening match of the Hofstra Asics Invitational on Friday afternoon.
The win came in the season opener for both teams and the victory marked the first in the head coaching career of the Pride's Head Coach
Emily Mansur.
Wills was joined in double figures by senior middle blocker
Nuria Lopes da Silva who tallied 10 kills and added a match-high six blocks.
Hofstra got off to a slow start in the contest as the Terriers won the first stanza, 25-21, holding the Pride to .167 hitting percentage.
The Pride would right the ship in the second stanza and tie the match at one with a 25-15 victory.
The third and fourth set would see Hofstra really start clicking on offense as the Pride hit at least .500 in both sets, combining for 29 kills on 49 attempts with just three errors to pull away for the four-set win.
Hofstra split the setting duties in the match with sophomore setter
Hannah Klemm leading the way 39 assists, while also chipping in with nine digs. Junior setter
Kaitlyn Krause added 12 assists for the Pride.
Junior defensive specialist
Corrina Delgadillo had a strong match as well with 10 digs and a match-high five assists.
The win improved Hofstra to 22-11 all-time in season openers and the Pride has now won three straight season openers.
Leah Zitting led the Terriers with 11 kills, while Sarina Rozek had 12 digs. Kelly O'Halloran added 16 assists and four digs.
Hofstra returns to action today when they take on Lafayette at 7:30 p.m.
