VB: Kostova Leads Way For Hofstra As Pride Improves To 2-0

Hempstead, NY – Sophomore middle blocker Veronika Kostova posted a career-high 12 kills and added four blocks as the Hofstra Volleyball team moved to 2-0 on the season with another four-set win (25-15, 24-26, 25-12, 25-12) on Friday evening in action at the Hofstra Asics Invitational.

It marks the third straight year Hofstra has won at least its first two matches of the season. Lafayette falls to 0-2 this season.

Kostova's previous career-high was seven kills at Northeastern last season. She was joined in double figures by senior outside hitter Kelsie Wills, who had a double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs.

Sophomore setter Hannah Klemm dished out 38 assists for the Pride, while sophomore libero Sophia Black picked up 15 digs.

Unlike today's earlier match, Hofstra earned a convincing 25-15 win in the opening set to take an early lead in the contest.

Lafayette would battle back from a 24-18 deficit in the second set to eventually capture a 26-24 victory to even the match.

At that point, both the Pride's offense and defense began working in symmetry and Hofstra had no problem pulling away with identical 25-12 scores in the third and fourth stanzas.

The Pride's defense held the Leopards to negative hitting percentages in both of the final two sets, while Hofstra combined for 23 kills over the final two sets.

Jet Manzi had team-highs of 11 kills and 16 digs for Lafayette, which also got 21 assists from Elizabeth Walsh.

Hofstra returns to action tomorrow for day two of the Hofstra Asics Invitational. The Pride will face Quinnipiac at 12:30 p.m. and then close play in the tournament with a 7:30 p.m. match against Santa Clara.
