SB: Hofstra Falls To Fordham In Non-Conference Meeting

Bronx, N.Y. – Fordham's Kayla Lombardo's solo home run in the third broke a tie as Hofstra fell to the Rams, 3-2, in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday afternoon at Bahoshy Field.

Sophomore Maggie Hawkins hit a solo home run for Hofstra and sophomore Chloe Fitzgerald scored a run. Hofstra took the early lead and tied the score in the top of the third before Lombardo homered in falling to 14-8 overall. Sydney Canessa's two-run single helped Fordham improve to 18-15.

Hofstra junior pitcher Morgan Lashley lost for just the third time in 13 decisions this season after she gave up all three runs in four innings with two strikeouts. Michele Daubman (10-8) earned the win by holding Hofstra to two runs in four innings.

Hawkins's opposite field home run started the second inning. Her line drive stayed fair just inside the right field foul pole, marking her team-leading fifth home run of the season to give Hofstra a 1-0 lead.

Fordham struck back for two runs in the bottom of the inning on Canessa's two-run single. The Rams started the inning with a single and a walk before inducing a pop out. A hard-hit to right forced Gabriella Luety at third. Lashley got a strike out to nearly escape the ham before Canessa struck a hard-hit single that hit the field umpire. Two runs scored but Hofstra ended the inning  when senior shortstop Becca Bigler retried the ball, threw home and junior catcher Erin Trippi threw out Rachel Gillen at third.

Fitzgerald started the third with a single to left and scored on Bigler's opposite-field double to the right-center gap to knot the score at 2. Bigler's 15 RBIs trail only Hawkins' 21 for the team lead.

Lombardo's two-out solo home run to left put Fordham back ahead, 3-2, in the bottom of the inning.

Hofstra put two runners on base again in the fourth when freshman Michaela Transue reached on her second career base hit with one out. Fitzgerald struck out but reached on a wild pitch before Daubman forced a ground out to end the inning as the Pride stranded six base runners through the first four innings. Hofstra left seven on base in total.

Patricia Maloney replaced Daubman in the fifth after the Rams' starter  allowed five hits, two runs and two strikeouts. Hofstra also made a pitching change in the fifth when Fordham transfer Taylor Pirone entered in relief of Lashley. The junior transfer retired all six batters she faced in two flawless innings keep the deficit at one. Lashley (10-3)  threw a scoreless fourth before exiting as Hofstra pitchers retired the final nine batters faced.

Maloney threw three scoreless innings to earn her first save of the campaign. She did not allow a hit in the relief effort.

The Pride will next face Delaware State in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday beginning at 4:30 p.m. from Hofstra Softball Stadium. Hofstra will then resume Colonial Athletic Association play on Saturday with a doubleheader against UNCW followed by the finale of a three-game set against the Seahawks on Sunday.
