WBB: Hofstra Posts Wire-To-Wire Home Win Over Robert Morris

By Brian Bohl

Hempstead, NY - Sophomore Kelly Loftus scored all of her team-high 15 points in the first half and freshman guard Ashunae Durant added a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds to lift Hofstra to a 71-51 victory over Robert Morris in a non-conference matchup on Saturday afternoon from the Mack Sports Complex.

Sophomore forward Elo Edeferioka scored nine points with 15 rebounds and Hofstra held Robert Morris to 3-of-25 three-point shooting. Sophomore guard Krystal Luciano added eight points and six rebounds and junior guard Darius Faulk contributed eight points and seven rebounds.

Hofstra defeated a second consecutive defending-conference champion in winning for the third time in four games and fourth time in five contests to improve to 5-3. The Pride defeated Robert Morris in the 2013-14 season opener and bested the NEC title winners by holding the Colonials to 19-of-71 (26.8 percent) from the field.

Anna Niki Stamolamprou led Robert Morris with a game-high 18 points and Judith Sole contributed 14 points off the bench, but the Colonials fell to 2-5.
The Pride played a defending conference champion for a third straight game and led the Colonials wire-to-wire. After falling in overtime to MVC winner Western Kentucky, the Pride bested three-time defending America East winner Albany and upended Robert Morris by holding a 60-30 rebounding advantage.

Edeferioka and Durant had almost as many combined rebounds (25) as RMU's entire team. Hofstra held a 26-16 advantage with points in the paint and the team's 17 offensive boards helped the Pride to a 15-3 advantage in second-chance points.

Durant scored eight points in the second half. Her first career double-double came against Northern Iowa. Both of her doubles-doubles have come at home.

Hofstra allowed a season-low 16 points in the opening half, besting the previous first-half low of 19 against Northern Iowa on Nov. 28. Loftus shot 4-for-6 from the field and Edeferioka tallied six points and eight rebounds as Hofstra took a 37-16 lead into the break.

After knocking down a career-high seven three-pointers as part of a career-high 25 points in Hofstra's last game at Albany, Loftus connected on a trio of three-pointers in the first three minutes. Hofstra surged to a 9-0 run that was extended to 18-4 at the first media timeout with Loftus reaching double figures before four minutes expired.

Hofstra took a 23-7 lead after Robert Morris went 2-for-11 during one stretch near the 11-minute mark. Six players scored at least three points in the opening half and Hofstra exploited RMU's defense with good ball-handling that led to a second-chance basket with junior Sydni Epps hitting a right-block jumper for a 36-14 lead.

Robert Morris got as close as 16 points in the second after Stamolamprou hit two free throws in the first minute. Hofstra called timeout, and RMU later went into an 0-for-7 skid from the field as Hofstra built a 52-29 lead with 11:20 remaining.

Freshman Aleana Leon's layup with two minutes left extended Hofstra's lead to 27 points at 69-42. Ten Hofstra players scored points.

Hofstra will resume play on Tuesday with a 5:30 p.m. game against NJIT. The Pride defeated the Highlanders at home in 2014.
